Scuttlebutt: Video of the Week

(November 7, 2008) David Brookes, Executive Director, International Hobie Class Association: "Forty years ago six friends sailed their Hobie 14's in the very first Hobie Regatta. They could not have imagined that 40 years later the Hobie 14 would still be raced. The Hobie 14 went on to become the second biggest multihull class in the world. While its big brother the Hobie 16 became the biggest multihull class in the world. It also has the honour of being the largest double handed class in the world.

"When sailors join and race the Hobie Class they realise that the strict one design means that sailors skill wins the racing not money. All the Hobies are raced with very strict Class Rules allowing the best sailor to win. The very strict rules controlling the equipment ensure that all sailors race as equals.

"The success of Hobie Racing can be best explained by the designer of the Hobie 14 and Hobie 16, Hobie Alter. Hobie's philosophy has been "it has to be fair and it has to be fun." Forty years later it is still fair and fun."
