US SAILING PRESENTS AWARDS AT ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

Curmudgeon garners prestigious President's Award

Portsmouth, R.I. (October 22, 2003) – US SAILING, national governing body of the sport, has presented several sailing organizations and volunteers with awards in recognition of their contribution to the sport of sailing. The awards were given at the organization’s annual general meeting in St. Louis, MO, during an awards dinner on Saturday, October 18. Awards that were presented include US SAILING President’s Awards, the Industry Award, the Timmy Larr Trophy, and the Gay S. Lynn Trophy.

President’s Award
The Curmudgeon

Judy and Stephanie McLennan as well as Tom Leweck (aka, The Curmudgeon) received US SAILING’s President’s Award for their contribution to the support and advancement of US SAILING and the sport of sailing.

Judy and her daughter Stephanie McLennan were presented with the award in honor of the U.S. Junior Women’s Championships that Judy’s father, Tom Clagett, created. With the continuing support of the Clagett and McLennan families, these events play a major role in the development of sailing for young women in the U.S.

Tom Leweck, editor of Scuttlebutt, also received the President’s Award. Scuttlebutt is a daily electronic newsletter of major yacht racing news, commentary, opinions and features, and as editor, Leweck has contributed significantly to the sport of sailing.

President’s Industry Award
The Sailing Company, which owns Sailing World and Cruising World magazines, received the President’s Industry award, which recognizes outstanding performance in promoting the growth of the sport of sailing and enhancing the relationship between the marine industry and US SAILING. The award was presented to John Burnham, editor of Sailing World magazine. Burnham has a long history of contributing to US SAILING and the sport of sailing. He has been a US SAILING volunteer for more than 20 years and counting.

Timmy Larr Trophy
Doris and Steve Colgate received US SAILING’s Timmy Larr Trophy for their numerous outstanding contributions to sailor education and training within US SAILING as well as throughout the U.S. Doris and Steve Colgate own and operate Offshore Sailing School, which has seven locations and has had more than 100,000 graduates come through. Steve is a long-time US SAILING volunteer, having served on numerous committees in the last two decades. Doris founded the National Women’s Sailing Association in 1990.

Gay S. Lynn Trophy
Peter Goldman and the Judd Goldman Adaptive Sailing Program of Chicago were presented with the Gay S. Lynn Trophy for outstanding contribution to disabled sailors and the sport of disabled sailing. Peter Goldman and his family designed the program in honor of Peter’s father, Judd Goldman, to enable people with disabilities to experience a sense of independence and achievement. The program reaches more than 1,000 participants a year through sailing classes for beginners as well as clinics for advanced sailors. The Gay S. Lynn Trophy was recently created by US SAILING’s Sailors With Special Needs (SWSN) Committee in memory of Gay Lynn, who worked with disabled sailors for many years as a members of the SWSN Committee and a Jury Chief at many international disabled sailing events, including world championships and Special Olympics.
