Scuttlebutt News:
The other side of Newport's finest
- Part 1 - Part 2 -
(Feb 26, 2007) Some of Ken Read’s Stingrays' teammates felt that he left out a few details in his report on hockey in Newport, RI (see Part 1). Afraid that Scuttlebutt readers might not have the complete picture of what becomes of Ken when he laces up the skates, the Vertically Challenged guy, Heart Trouble guy, and 78 year old bow guy have chimed in here with the following scouting report:
Kenny (the enforcer) Read: For you hockey fans, Kenny will never be a finalist for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. Kenny is currently our team’s penalty minutes leader, and third in the 10-team Over 40 league in that category. Some of his recent highlights include:
Sept: 2005: Receives a body check behind the goal and separates his shoulder. After taking one shift off, he comes back on the ice (with the separated shoulder, as folklore has it), has a breakaway, and gets hauled down from behind near the end of the game. He and the other team's goalie get into a fracas as time expires.
December 2005: Brad Read is hit from behind into one of the glass supports near the penalty box. Kenny comes up and knocks the guy into next week. Jerry Kirby comes in and pulls Kenny off the guy as Brad is nursing his cracked ribs.
March 2006: Final Game of the Year. Opponent slashes Kenny across the back of the legs (two-hander, more or less unprovoked) and Ref doesn't see it, which led to an extended tussle. Ankle injury nearly keeps Kenny from joining Ericsson VOR team on the final legs of race.
February 2007: The calmer cooler #55 has come into being. Playing our nemesis, the Silver Bullets, Kenny goes into the corner, and a guy comes out swinging at Kenny. Our fearless protagonist takes one for the team, doesn't retaliate, and the antagonist gets the maximum penalty!
Besides that, it is good wholesome fun out in the Over 40 hockey league! As for the rest of the story, we'll leave the Boat Captains to chime in on their own!
