Scuttlebutt News:
Windward Passage Road Trip
(July 25, 2007) The legendary Alan Gurney-designed 73-footer Windward Passage is on the hard, with yacht designer Alan Andrews working to pimp this famous ride. Originally built in 1968, Andrews has been asked to design a new keel for Windward Passage. By applying new technology to the design, he expects to lighten the boat by over 4 tons while maintaining the same righting moment. Near as he can tell, this will be Passage's fourth keel and the first major revision in about 18 years. Also scheduled to be modernized is the rudder.
Below shows rig pulling day, where she was than hauled out of the water to have her keel sliced off before relocating to the Westerly Marine yard in Santa Ana, CA. Images of the new keel compared to the old keel are at the bottom.
