Scuttlebutt has partnered with Inmarsat to help showcase the work of the MCM, and will be posting the award winning footage following each leg.

ERICSSON 4
GUY SALTER, 36. On the international team, Ericsson 4. His sailing history covers two America’s Cups and the Volvo Ocean Race 2000-2001. Graduated from film school with BSc (Hons) in biology, as well as film and photography. “The environment is obviously very difficult. Electronics don’t enjoy salt water – or any water. Plus the boats are violent and there’s a lot of being thrown around on the waves. So that’s the first challenge and then it’s keeping out of the way of my brother and anyone else who needs to keep the boat going as fast as possible,” he says. He has reported back that the balance of staying out of the way and documenting onboard life is working well so far. Lives on the Isle of Wight.

Media crew member (MCM) Guy Salter sailing onboard Ericsson 4 won the Inmarsat Media Prize for broadcast material produced during the first leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, from Alicante to Cape Town.

The Trophy and prize money was presented by James Collett, Director of Commercial Solutions for Inmarsat. Collett paid tribute to the tough and pioneering role of the MCM on the race and revealed that ‘Guy Salter’s work across all the four mediums of video, still photography, audio and text had exceeded all expectations and, that all the nominees achieved something exceptional. Rick Deppe from PUMA and Sander Pluijm on Delta Lloyd were the other nominees for this award. The still photography of Gustav Morin aboard Ericsson 3 was also singled out for praise.

Here is a collection of footage from all the MCMs during Leg 1:

For the first time in the 35-year history of the race there is one crewmember onboard each race boat whose job is purely to capture all the scenes, shots and stories that have previously gone untold. Recognising the unique contribution of this new addition to the crew, Inmarsat is providing a €1,000 prize for the best contribution on each of the 10 legs, and, when the race finishes in St Petersburg, Russia in late June 09, an additional €10,000 prize will be awarded to the MCM judged to have made the best overall contribution to race coverage.
