The North American Optimist Championships are this week in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico, with 185 entries from 20 countries competing on Banderas Bay.  With three wins in seven races and an impressive 24-point lead over the second-place boat, Mascalzone Latino won the inaugural Farr 40 Open Nordic Championship. Held July 5-8 and hosted by the Royal Norwegian Yacht Club (Kongelig Norsk Seilforening, KNS) with support from the Hankø Yacht Club and the Farr 40 European Fleet Association, the regatta welcomed 27 Farr 40s and served as the fourth stop on the European Circuit. The Farr 40 Class will next compete at the Skaw Farr 40 Race Week (July12-14) in Skagen, Denmark, then to Rolex Baltic Week (Aug. 17-19) in Neustadt, Germany, followed by the Rolex Farr 40 Pre-Worlds, August 24-25, and the Rolex Farr 40 World Championship, August 29 – September 1.  The strong Spanish contingent among the 124-boat fleet at the 2007 J/80 World Championship in La Trinite sur Mer, France (July 7, 2007) took three of the top four positions, with Jose Maria Torcida Seghers winning 5 of the 11 races for the win. Photo ©Kos.Kospictures.com  At the 2005 awards ceremonies in Waikiki, Wendy Siegal receives a special award from Transpacific Yacht Club Commodore Al Garnier for her work in resurrecting the Cal 40 class. Siegal was found drowned Thursday, July 5, 2007 near her Cal 40, Willow Wind, in the Alamitos Bay Marina, just four days before the first boats, including three of her beloved Cal 40s, were to start the 2007 Transpac race. Photo by Rich Roberts.  Don Allen provides his depiction of the revised design of the America's Cup class, which he feels will emphasize the offwind game. His remarks, "Stats show more passes downwind. NOW look out. The AC Designers are short on design time, so their best bet is to concede the upwind legs and focus on much faster downwind speeds. The next ACC design should outmaneuver prior to start, tack faster upwind [based on winning the start], slow the faster upwind boat down, and, pass downwind."  Photographer Oskar Kihlborg caught this dismasting in the Match Cup Sweden event last week, where in the last match of the Petit Final, Mattias Rahm (SWE) was on the final spinnaker run to the finish, putting every last effort into trying to catch Jesper Radich (DEN) just a few lengths ahead, broke his mast just 100 metres from the finish. The Pasha Bulka was anchored off the coast of Newcastle just north of Sydney Australia waiting to go into port and take on a load of iron ore. It is believed that the skipper neglected to heed a weather warning and a recommendation to move to deeper water off the coast. The anchor dragged and presto, boat on beach 8th June 2007. The first attempt to refloat on 28th June, failed after 2 of the three tow lines broke. She moved though! Live video is also available from coastalwatch.com. Photos: Kingsley www.miboat.com   From the Superyacht Cup 2007 in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, with ´Scorpione dei Mare´ and ´Maltese Falcon´ in a port-starboard situation. The bearing showed ´Scorpione´ clear ahead, but a friendly Tom Perkins, owner/helmsman on ´Falcon´ did mention later that a high risk was taken, and we should consider that ´Falcon´, with its 1300 tons, is severely restricted when it comes to close quarter manouvres.
