Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week August 6-10, 2007 A random assortment of photos submitted to Scuttlebutt this week. Click here to submit your photos for consideration.  Pindar, the brand new Juan K-designed Open 60, who was participating in the Artemis Challenge charitiy race at Skandia Cowes Week, dismasted whilst sailing around the Isle of Wight. The wing mast snapped less than two metres from the deck at 11.30 this morning. All of the crew are safe. Reaching along the southern side of the Island, Pindar was leading the fleet when the incident occurred. The cause of the breakage is not yet known, though early indications is that it was a non-rigging tube failure. In fairness to the Open 60 fleet, not everyone broke their mast in the Artemis Challenge charitiy, and the group deserves some love outside of the disaster photo above. It is not often to see these boats close to shore, as they are often charging across oceans and enduring epic conditions. Here are some photos by Mark Lloyd and Jan Pehrson showing the kinder, friendlier side of the the Open 60s.  We have completely forgotten the story behind this picture, but a visual of these two British supergals all dolled up had to be shared. We cropped out the guy they were looking at so we could enlarge the image of multi-olympic medalist Shirley Robertson and long distance legend Ellen MacArthur showing off the night time side of their persona.  Competitors in the Freedom Independence 20 fleet of the 2007 Independence Cup/North American Challenge Cup in Chicago once again bowed down to the queen of the IC/NACC Karen Mitchell (Deerfield Beach, Fla.) as she took her 5th consecutive championship with crew JP Creignou (St. Petersburg, Fla.). A member of the 2007 United States Disabled Sailing Team, Mitchell logs this win as part of her longer-term goal: to become the first woman to represent the United States at the Paralympic Games. For the Paralympic Games, Mitchell and Creignou are campaigning in the SKUD-18, the doublehanded class to be raced in the 2008 Games.  This year, the interclub Balboa Challenge in Southern California used the Governor's Cup 21s, the Alan Andrews designed boats originally conceived for the annual junior match race event, the Governor's Cup. This fleet of boats are controlled by the Newport Balboa Sailing and Seamanship Association, and chartered out to a limited number of events each year. While areas in the northeast have been able to attain fleets of club-owned keelboats that have helped fuel the growth of team racing, there remains no clubs in Southern California that have tackled this concept. So far the Governor's Cup 21s and a fleet of Catalina 37s, owned by the Long Beach Sailing Foundation and used prominently in the Congressional Cup event, are the closest to it. This image above was taken from the European Championship last week in Arendal, Norway where over 50 boats competed, and the class is expecting a good turnout at the Worlds in Argentina this November. Not to be left behind is Danish boatbuilder Borresen, who has begun their production of Solings, and will have 7 boats made in time for delivery to the Worlds. Photo by Age Pettersen  Douglas Chew and the crew of Challenger, a Merit 25, catch air on a typical summer afternoon on the San Francisco Bay, where 34kt winds were gusting to 38kts on this day. There are some fond memories of the Merit 25 at Scuttlebutt headquarters, as its origin comes close to home. Following close on the heels of the J/24, the Merit 25 was a close copy, and in many ways, a better boat. The Curmudgeon owned one for awhile, and the Publisher was part of the winning crew that took a Merit 25 to the 1980 MORC Internationals in Milwaukee, WI. Photo by Lyons Imaging.  Every Tuesday, participants in the Rye YMCA Adventure Camp board a fleet of six American Yacht Club (AYC) Ideal 18 sailboats in Rye, NY. The campers, ages 11-14, take part in an “Introduction to Sailing” program developed and conducted by Chris and Peter Duncan of the AYC. Campers learn about the basics of sailing, the parts of a boat, different knots, how to read charts, and how to navigate. Instructors include volunteer members of AYC as well as older, more experienced Junior AYC sailors. The program began on July 3 and will end on August 14.  Harken Yacht Equipment recently held their 40th Anniversary Party, and Scuttlebutt had an embedded reporter join host Peter Harken and a group of VIP attendees on a tour of the late night spots in downtown Pewaukee, WI.
