Laser SB3

When it was announced in April 2007 that Gavel Securities Limited (the holding company of Performance Sailcraft Europe Limited and Laser Sailboats Limited) had acquired US company Vanguard Sailboats, it seemed to be only a matter of time before their very popular Laser SB3 (above) was imported into North America. Based largely in Europe, with over 90 competing last week in Skandia Cowes Week (GBR), rumorville now has it that two Laser SB3s just landed in Newport, RI for promotion this fall. Shane Cook provides the following report from British Columbia, Canada: "The birth of our daughter has limited the amount of time we can spend doing the weekend regatta circuits. However, that has not put an end to our sailing. This photo was taken on our return home to Vancouver from a five day cruise with our 2 year old daughter on our Tanzer 26. With a little planning and consideration we found you can have a great time cruising with young children. What could be better than enjoying fine weather, nice breezes and beautiful scenery with the whole family."

Frequent contributor and forward thinking 'butthead Don Allen sends us his view on the new class of America's Cup boats. Just as they say in rock 'n roll, what is new now was new before too. Don sees the butterfly leading the charge this time.

Ceemo Design

Ceemo Design is a young company specializing in Carbon fibre design and other reinforced plastics, and their first in-house project is the one spoke carbon steering wheel. Says Alexander Spruijt of Ceemo Design, “All the one-piece moulded carbon steering wheels on the market are manufactured the same way, with an inflatable tube inside, but ours isn’t. We figured out a way to create a steering wheel without an inflatable tube that stay’s inside. The engineering behind the wheel took a lot of time, and at some times we really questioned if it could be done to construct a one spoke carbon steering wheel and get it through the CE-tests. But we did it.” Additional photos and information in the New Product Announcements section.

Here is further proof that the Optimist class has crossed the deserts and climbed over mountain ranges of the western US to reach the left coast. Well suited for rough sailing, Optimist sailors spent three days at the wind capitol of the Northwest, The Gorge, at the WIND clinic, where top-flight coaches provided intense training in the big winds. Another Cabarete day in the Dominican Republic, with trade winds boosted by warm land temperatures. This site is a regularly used training center for top flight Olympic Laser contenders, along with providing epic conditions for kiteboarding and boardsailing. Photo by Eric Hertsens.

Here we have a J/24 taking a header, however, the names of those involved and the site of the incident are not disclosed to protect the innocent.
