Hamilton Island Race Week

Crews contesting the 21-mile race around the picturesque islands of the Whitsundays, race five of Audi Hamilton Island Race Week, were treated to a spectacle of two mother humpback whales, one already accompanied by its calf and the other giving birth as Graeme Wood's Wot Yot passes by (above). O’pen BIC

Clear skies and NW gusts up to 25 knots set the stage for the first US O’pen Cup in Newport, RI on August 18th. Touted as the “Un-Regatta” by organizers, BIC Sport and Sail Newport, the event put the new O’pen BIC in the spotlight for the 40 juniors participating, plus dozens of parents and spectators. The new-age format included high-speed slalom, O’pen Cross, freestyle, adventure race, and a festival-style beach atmosphere. Photos by www.petermcgowanphotography.com.

Elvström Sobstad’s UK loft tackled a problem with the Swan 45 headsail, which could not be made to the full class rule spec without fouling the spreader. The concept was to design the leechline around the spreaders, support it with battens, thus effectively ‘cutting out’ room for the spreader and gaining 6% extra sail area as the reward.

Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva

While America's Cup defender Alinghi defends the protocol for the 33rd event, maybe they should move the show to their home in Lake Geneva as well. Situated in the southwestern corner of Switzerland, Lake Geneva is Switzerland's largest lake (581 km² = 224 sq. miles), is at an altitude of 372 meters and has a depth of 310 meters. From a sceneary and pollution standpoint, the place looks like everything Valencia is not, yet it will still provide the whacky sailing that made the 32nd America's Cup such a treat to watch.
