Junior sailing programs have finished up for another summer, with kids now trading life jackets for school backpacks. Patricia Hart Zackman sent in these photos, which seem to scream out, "See ya next summer!"

Knickerbocker Cup

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, racing for the 2007 Knickerbocker Cup match race event took place on Manhasset Bay in Colgate 26s in western Long Island Sound, with the Bayview Yacht Club Match Racing Team of skipper Chris Van Tol, Mike Hoey, John Van Tol and Mike Rehe winning the event on August 22-26. The plan was to haul the boat to clean the hull for the beer can races that night. Unfortunatley, things went south when the boat owner mistakenly attached the lifting sling to the engine drive shaft, rather than the adjacent deadeye that is in the keel for lifting. Ripping out the engine is messy business, and this incident is further evidence that despite the lifting deadeye and the engine shaft being adjacent to each other, close still only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Farr 40

The inaugural Windy City Match Race was hosted last week by Chicago Yacht Club, and benefited the Children Affected by AIDS Foundation (CAAF) and Chicago Yacht Club Foundation. Using Farr 40's, this class of boat will return to Great Lakes match racing when U.S. and Canadian sailors compete in the 110-year old Canada’s Cup Match Race Series. The Macatawa Bay Yacht Club has challenged defender Royal Canadian Yacht Club, Toronto, with the contest taking place on Lake Ontario beginning October 12, 2007 and continuing until one of the teams is victorious in five races. Onboard their Dencho Marine Choate 48, the Richley family was among the entries in the Long Point Race Week that was held last week between Southern California and nearby Catalina Island. The 3-day event included a race from Newport Beach to Catalina, a day race at Catalina, a return race to the mainland, plus a couple days of parties at the only crusing ground in those parts. Unfortunately, their mast was a casualty on the trip over to Catalina, but from the looks of their battle flag, we suspect that the lack of further racing didn't get in the way of them having a good time.
