Wild Oats

Wild Oats

Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is on this week in Porto Cervo, Sardinia, Italy, where it hasn't gone so well for Bob Oatley's maxi Wild Oats (AUS). The predicted match-up with Neville Crichton's Alfa Romeo (NZL) was pre-empted in Race 1 when Oats apparently suffered an engine failure during the start and was unable to power up the hydraulics. But that was small in comparison to the drama from Race 2, when the Oatley's canter snapped her mast and - due to the load from the fully-canted keel - launched several crew into the drink. Regatta over. Photos by Amory Ross (top) and Carlo Borlenghi (bottom).

Bayview Mackinac Race

Odds are that if you did the Chicago and/or Bayview Mackinac Races this summer, your "sailor" memory might have erased some or most of the pain brought on by the severe lack of wind. To sober you up, here's a reminder from Mark McCrindle of how you spent your vacation. Taken on July 22nd, the boat in the photo is the C&C 41 TITAN, which had this wind - or lack thereof - for 16 hours.

Rhodes 19

Boston’s Courageous Sailing Center hosted the two-day 2007 Rhodes 19 Junior Nationals on Boston Harbor. With the wind light and shifty the first day and strong the next, the racing was competitive and put the skills of the fourteen teams of junior sailors to the test over sixteen races. Last year’s winner David Pierce from Boston’s Community Boating (CBI) and his crew Katerina Yee and Olivia Pierce, were pushed hard but retained their title. The Rhodes 19 Junior Nationals is an open regatta for sailors ages 18 and younger hosted each year at the end of August by the Courageous Sailing Center.

Typically with photos like these, the facts are kept vague to protect those who carry out such acts of failure. We know that it was a windy day on Lake Michigan, and that this ride was fun while it lasted.

SailingOne one-design catamaran

La Trinité-sur-Mer, France - The 17th Trophée Clairefontaine of Sailing Champions annually invites eight guest champions to compete in a three-crew regatta, which this year was won by Franck Cammas and included Mike Sanderson, Loïck Peyron, Jean-Pierre Dick, Vincent Riou, Michel Desjoyeaux, Jérémie Beyou, and Pascal Bidégorry. The teams use the SailingOne one-design catamaran (7.65 m) for the event.

If you hang out with the French or the Swiss, it is only a matter of time before the envelope as we know it is stretched beyond what us in North America are used to. Here we have Alexandre Schneiter and his Seb Schmidt designed Psaros 40, which has just broken the thirteen years old Ruban Violet, a speed record for monohulls around Lake Geneva (Switzerland) set on the Bol d’Or Mirabaud course. Established in 1994, the new record shaved 1.25 hours off the previous record, which might be the difference that trapeze wires and A-Sails provide. Photos by © Loris Von Siebenthal

Finn

The Labor Day regatta at Alamitos Bay YC (Long Beach, CA) is annually among the largest one-design dinghy events in SoCal, and this year enjoyed the steamy weather that had been haunting the region for the previous few weeks. With the US Olympic trials for the Finn class being held this fall in Newport Beach, CA, the class has enjoyed a resurgence of activity in Southern California, even attracting some of the older crowd back into small boats. Among the 19-boat fleet was Andy Casey, who is seen here rounding the leeward mark on the first day of racing. Photo: UnderTheSunPhotos.com
