Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week September 10-14, 2007 A random assortment of photos submitted to Scuttlebutt this week. Click here to submit your photos for consideration.  The US 470 Olympic Trials will be in Long Beach, CA next month, and top teams are now on-site fitting in their final training routine before the first gun fires. Here is one of the top teams - Amanda Clark and Sarah Mergenthaler - photographed by local coach Jay Glaser and riding shotgun next to notable sailor and heli pilot Howie Hamlin.    While it wasn't all light air and hot temps during the 2007 Annapolis Race Week earlier this month, we do see some evidence above. One team goes for a swim while another cracks out the sun shade as they await for wind to start. For the team on Hurricane Kelley (top photo), the warm weather permitted the gals to pass on the sweaty cotton crew shirts and don their own style of technical gear. Photos by John Bildahl/ www.johnbildahlphotography.com.  The Farr 11 debuts at the United States Sailboat Show in Annapolis, MD, and Scuttlebutt is already booked to take it for a ride. This 36' high-performance keel boat incorporates canting keel technology along with twin asymmetric canards and twin retractable rudders, and we suspect, hauls some serious 'butt.  No, this isn't the neighborhood kids coming over for a sail, but the site of the Plymouth Yacht Club in Plymouth, MA does look pretty, darn residential. PYC is one of America’s oldest clubs, founded in 1890, and this summer it hosted its first ever junior regatta with 120 youths participating. Photo: Lili Colby, 2007  Germany's Tommy Muller, Vincent Hoesh and Max Sheibmayr won the 2007 Aberdeen Dragon World championships this month in Ireland after a light air series on Dublin Bay. The lone North American team was Ted Sawyer, Martin Payne, and Pedro Andrade Clairvoyant, who finished 24th out of the 68 entrants.  Disney's Morning Light project got a lot of attention this past summer, and among the crew was Chris Branning, who is seen here putting some training time into his Laser at King's Point. For the ride to Hawaii he was able to use his merchant marine skills, and under the tutelage of Stan Honey, was the navigator for the Transpac race. Since then, he has been a pro on a TP 52 out of Connecticut, but will soon be returning to King's Point to begin 200 days at sea. Not much navigating needed on this day, except for finding a course through the big winds that later topped out at 52 knots. Click here to submit your photos for consideration. |
