Ross Weene of Rodger Martin Design in Newport, RI sent this photo, announcing their latest launching, a Class 40, which is the first to be designed and built in the US. The official commissioning party is on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 4:00 PM at Newport Shipyard.  Solo sailor Alex Thomson’s brand new state-of-the-art Open 60 yacht, Hugo Boss, was officially christened this week in Hamburg, Germany. The new HUGO BOSS replaces the boat that Alex lost in the Southern Ocean during last years Velux 5 Oceans Race, when he was rescued by fellow competitor Mike Golding OBE. Attended by 1000 guests, champagne was sprayed onto the bow of the boat prior to an amazing light and pyrotechnics show, during which the 60-foot yacht appeared out of the mist on the banks of the River Elbe, suspended from a 30-metre high crane.  Among those who will be in Detroit, MI this week for the 2007 Melges 24 U.S. Nationals is 1999 College Sailor of the Year Mark Ivey, sailing with David Ford's two-boat Lightwave team. Ivey came to the Motor City via Portugal, where he crewed for Augie Diaz in the Snipe Worlds, and before that, he was in Denmark as tactician for Helmut Jahn in the Farr 40 Worlds.  We are not sure what Artist Don Allen does when he is not spoofing on the America's Cup, and this is another one of his "visual takes" on recent events. Renaming it the "Alinghi Cup," he provides here the outline of the new event's Notice of Race.  While we do not wholly endorse the TEAMORIGIN color scheme, we do applaud the British team's announcement this week, which revealed team personnel that is largely British and exceedingly talented. Photos by Ian Roman/Team Origin  During the Seiko 49er European Championships last week, sailors were getting the chance to test the new carbon rig and put it through its paces in Marsala, Italy. The current 49er rig, now 11 years old and built with the technology of the day, has often been an issue for sailors with respect to variances in bend characteristics and longevity. Technology has moved on since then and now offers solutions to these issues. Two manufacturers (CST and Southern Spars) have been short-listed by the 49er Technical Committee. Along with the consideration of the carbon rig comes a new mainsail design incorporating a flat head profile. The class would like to make a decision on how to proceed this month. Click here for the Class forum.  Toronto, ONT has been the site this week for the International C Class Championship, hosted by Royal Canadian Yacht Club. Of the four entries, one of them has given the foil world a look, and while it hasn't panned out yet to provide a performance edge, the door is far from closed on the concept.
