Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week October 29-November 2, 2007 A random assortment of photos submitted to Scuttlebutt this week. Click here to submit your photos for consideration.  On Wednesday, October 31, 2007, the America's Cup Management did something they said they would do - and something they said they wouldn't do. First they completed the new 90-foot ACC rule by the end of October. However, despite repeatedly saying they would not provide the rule to anyone not already entered in the 33rd America's Cup event, they changed their mind and published the rule online. The photo above is a comparison between the Version 5 rule used this year in the 32nd America's Cup, and what the new AC90 boat is expected to look like.  This aerial photo of a 505 was sent in by Mike Martin, and comes from an outing Howie Hamlin took in the helicopter. The 505 group in Long Beach, CA does loads of training, and they pull these aerial outings to check sail shape, often with sailmaker Jay Glaser riding shotgun.    This weekend in Annapolis is pretty busy with the IRC East Coast Champs and the J/105 North Americans. However, the bay had the bit on last weekend too. On the water were Etchells and Stars racing in the Annapolis Yacht Club Fall One-Design Regatta, and 53 J/24s contesting their annual East Coast Championships hosted by Severn Sailing Association. Gary Jobson took the Etchells fleet ahead of Al Terhune, Jr. (Al in photo) by 4 points in a 19 boat fleet. In the Star fleet, Peter McChesney sailing for Annapolis YC overcame a 4 point deficit after day one to beat Lee Dayton sailing out of Indian Harbor YC by one point after five races (photo of Lee/8059 and Peter/8264). Finally, coming in the same position that they finished this past April during the J/24 National Championships, Connecticut sailor Chris Zaleski beat outAnnapolis's Mark Hillman by a single point after eight races (photo of Chris - bow 33). The J/109 class held their North American champs last weekend in Long Beach, CA, and while the fleet was small, the racing was tight. John Shulze and Linstar's crew from Newport Beach, CA show the upwind form that led to their third place finish, while the father/son team Brian and Stephen Tedeschi from Newport, RI celebrate their win at the trophy presentation with crew Tony Tedeschi, Mark Ploch, Mark “Gonzo” Gonzales, Alex Millet, Melody Schleusner, and Peter Hamm, with LBYC Vice Commodore Bobby Frazier standing by. Photo by Rick Roberts.  The final photo of Loki, the R/P 60 that lost its rudder during the Rolex Middle Sea Race. With the start and finish in Malta (a small island nation in the Mediterranean Sea), and the course taking the fleet around Sicily, Loki's crew was airlifted when a suitable means of steerage could not safeguard them from the rocky shoreline. The anchor held for awhile, but soon dragged, and Loki was later destroyed when it drifted ashore. Photo: Carlo Borlenghi/ROLEX  The launch and first sail of the one-design monohull from the Veolia Oceans® series especially designed for the SolOceans was last week in the harbour of Cherbourg-Octeville. The SolOceans is the first single-handed oceanic round the world race sailed on equal footing on sixteen-metre (52.5') high-tech one-design monohulls all identical to each other: the Veolia Oceans®. The race will start in Lower Normandy (France) and will stopover in Wellington, the capital of New Zealand, with the arrival of the return leg in Cherbourg-Octeville. The start of the first SolOceans is set for 25 October 2009. The SolOceans will then run every two years. Click here to submit your photos for consideration. |
