From Rohan Veal, 2007 Moth World Champion: “HH Sheikh Mohammed (the visionary ruler of Dubai and Vice President of the UAE) had this fantastic idea to build huge sand islands offshore of Dubai to resemble a map of the World. Of course the yachties here have an 'around the world' sailing record, or known locally as the 'Jo Verne Trophy' (named after the guy invented it), not to be confused with the 'Jules Verne Trophy' which is the award offered to the fastest lap of the planet (not the world). The previous record was held by a VX40 catamaran at 1 hr 42 mins, but I have now set a new record at 1 hr 29 mins and 37 seconds.” Photos submitted by Rohan Veal.  After laying dormant for years, the Long Beach YC resurrected their Long Beach to Cabo San Lucas International Yacht Race this year. Only six boats entered, with two dropping out before the finish. Mike Campbell and Dale Williams’ Kernan 70, Peligroso, won on corrected handicap time, finishing just before midnight Tuesday at 11:54 p.m. PDT. During the race Peligroso and Doug Baker’s Andrews 80, Magnitude 80, swapped the corrected time lead back and forth, with Baker’s team crossing the finish line first on elapsed time at 4:43 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, but they missed the race record by 57 minutes, and landed second overall on corrected time. The team from Navy won the 2007 Kennedy Cup, Intercollegiate Sailing’s Big Boat National Championship, in dominating fashion, winning 6 of 10 races and never scoring worse than a third against 8 other competitors. Navy Sailing hosted the three-day regatta aboard the Academy’s fleet of 44-foot sloops. The event enjoyed moderate to strong winds for the first and second day, with lighter winds for the final day. Navy got off to a strong start and never looked back, while California Maritime Academy, winner of the Shields Trophy Regatta this past September, recovered their form after a poor showing on day one to finish second overall while NY Maritime won the last race to secure third.  Humorist Don Allen suggests that it is time for sailing to follow the lead from the auto industry, and begin enforcing a “click-it or ticket” policy for seatbelts. While Scuttlebutt does not endorse this view, we thought it was worth sharing.   With a fleet of 45 boats, anticipation ran high in Annapolis at the Storm Trysail Club's three-day IRC East Coast Championship. Much of the attention was toward defending champion Dan Meyers’ (Boston, Mass./Newport, R.I.), who was sailing his new boat Numbers, a Judel-Vrolijk 66.5-foot design purpose-built for the IRC rule (photos above). Meyers finished second in IRC 1 to John Kilroy (Los Angeles, Calif.), who stood taller in IRC stature with his "Box-Rule" Transpac 52 Samba Pa Ti. Photos by Sean Simmons.  There are very few people in the sport that deserve the reverence that four time Olympic Gold medallist Paul Elvstrøm has earned, who is seen above as one of six inductees into the inaugural ISAF Hall of Fame created by the International Sailing Federation. Joining Elvstrøm in the Hall of Fame are Sir Robin Knox-Johnson, Dame Ellen Macarthur, Olin Stephens, Barbara Kendall and Éric Tabarly.
