Etchell sailors in North America head to Miami, FL in the winter for the Jaguar Series, a collection of four events from December through March. Seventy-three entrants attended the first event last weekend - The Piana Cup - that was won by Bill Hardesty. Photo by John Payne.  The bowsprit was the loser in a collision this week at the Rolex Trophy being sailed off Sydney Heads in Australia, with many in the fleet using the event as a tune-up for the Sydney Hobart Race. Steve McConaghy reported he was steering Ray Roberts' Cookson 50 Quantum Racing on a tight lay to the last top mark rounding in race one when their jib backwinded, throwing them onto port tack with no steerage and into Bob Steel's TP52 Quest which was on starboard tack. Photo by Andrea Francolini.    The Dubai Gold Cup – the last event of the RC 44 Championship Tour – commences this week with eight teams representing eight nations. The Dubai Gold Cup is the first overseas regatta for the RC 44 fleet, with the first RC 44 Champion being crowned at the end of the Gold Cup, on Sunday, December 16.  American Dave Perry recently won the fourth stage of the South American Match-race Tour in Porto Alegre, Brazil, with local Daniel Glomb seen above in a rather messy maneuver.  Roy Disney's latest Pyewacket, the fifth in the series, is a Reichel Pugh 60-foot cruser that was launched this week at Westerly Marine on Wednesday. Seen here in the saddle with the keel up, but a touch a button drops the draft from eight and a half feet down to about thirteen feet.  For sailors that want to travel the Intercoastal Waterway with a mast higher than 65 feet, this boat demonstrates a successful technique. It had an 80' mast and 7'10" draft, and with each water bag weighing 2000 pounds, they were able to get the slant needed to clear the mast. Click here to submit your photos for consideration. |
