Photo of Great Grand Master (65+ years old) David Hartman of Florida in Cabarete, Dominican Republic at the 6th Caribbean Laser Midwinter Regatta. The three day event saw the range of conditions, and was won by Raul Aguayo (DOM), with Canadians Lee Parkhill and Antoine Boueilh following. First place Masters with Handicap was Ari Barshi (DOM), followed by 10 times world champion Keith Wilkins (GBR), and Tim Landt (USA). When the smog lifts, the skies clear, and the sun shines, Southern Californians are greeted with those brilliant winter days when the nearby snow-covered mountains become part of the sailing backdrop This photo by Rick Roberts was taken last weekend during Long Beach YC's season-opening Two Gates Invitational race.

The winds are not expected to be too strong or consistent during the 2008 Olympic Games this summer in Qingdao, China, and the water quality has proven to be poor. Perhaps the sailors will consider taking some time out to join the locals for a day at the beach.

With the AP flag flying briskly these days over the America's Cup, allow us to get sidetracked and show this image taken recently at Cortes Bank, an underwater mountain range whose tallest peak rises 4,000 feet from the ocean floor to within about four feet of the surface. Residing about 100 miles off the coast of San Diego, CA - site of 27th, 28th, and 29th America's Cup - Cortes Bank had been surfed only a handful of times in the past decade. But with just the right conditions, its shallow waters turn huge ocean swells into giant, perfect breaking waves. This image is of Mike Parsons, 42 riding a wave estimated to be at least 80 feet in height. If only the folks calling the San Diego events "The Coma off Pt Loma" knew what existed just offshore. Photo by Robert Brown/Billabong XXL Big Wave.
