From Mark Eustis: “Concerning this issue of keel or no keel on a multihull, the folks who designed the record breaking l’Hydroptère found nothing wrong with a keeled multihull. Apparently, Cap’n Nat Herreshoff thought so too, as he played with cats back in ‘76 and ’77 (1800 and…), and did well enough to have them banned. Some things never change.”  Here is a picture of the King 40 hull #1 ‘Blondie’, the Mark Mills designed IRC Cruiser/Racer commissioned by Summit Yachts and built by King Marine in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  The Ice and Snow Sailing World Championships are next week in Val Brilliant, on Quebec's Gaspe Peninsula, where the event has attracted athletes from as far away as Cuba, Belgium, Latvia, Estonia, Finland and Poland. -- http://www.wissa2008.org/  From Renata Goodridge: “Greetings from Barbados. I am writing to inform you of a courageous event about to take place in Barbados on February 10, 2008. My sailing skipper of many years, Andrew Burke, well known Caribbean racer all of his life, lost an arm to cancer a few years ago, and he is now going to sail solo, single-handed around the island (ours!) for cancer awareness and to raise money for cancer treatments here in Barbados and the region. Would you please consider making a mention of this amazing man and his willingness to make a stand in the best way he knows how - out on the water.”  On Thursday, January 31, Courageous Sailing Center hosted the First Annual Commodores Salute at the Intercontinental Hotel in Boston. The event raised funds for the Charlestown-based charity whose goal is to provide a fun, safe and accessible environment that promotes life skills and values through the sport of sailing. The keynote speech was given by Gary Jobson - one of the United States most famous sailors, America’s Cup Champion, ESPN correspondent and leukemia survivor. Photo by Kara Delahunt.  This "Homeland Security" sign has been seen throughout Florida, with this one being photographed in Key West. It would appear that the US government is reaching out to the community to help identify that bad guys. This is all well and good, however, the fact of the matter is that everything listed on this sign happens daily in Key West… because it is Key West. When folks retreat to the southernmost city in the continental United States, it is usually because they already are suspicious and unusual.  Mini-Sailor Lucas Schröder is winner of the first Dutch Solo Challenge Award. The award has been created by the Dutch shorthanded.nl foundation to reward Dutch solo sailors, to promote solo sailing in general, and to stimulate developments in this extreme type of top-sport. Lucas finished 7th in the Transat 650 at the end of October last year. That achievement made him the highest ranking Dutchman. The Transat 650, sailing from France to Brasil, is probably the most challenging race for these small boats. The other nominees were Koen van Esch (17th Transat 650), Jelmer Bouw (27th Transat 650) and Jan Kees lampe (2x Line honours AZAB). Click here to submit your photos for consideration. |
