Click image to enlarge.  This week Frenchman Antoine Albeau broke the existing 500 Metre speed sailing record in Saintes Maries de la Mer, France. After months of waiting for the big mistral winds, the speed canal at the shores of the Mediterrean Sea came to life again with strong mistral winds gusting to 45-50 knots. Subject to WSSRC ratification, Albeau hit a big gust and flew down the 1km man made canal at 49.09 knots, 0.4 knots faster than the old record of Finian Maynard. Photo Gilles Martin-Raget.  In his attempt to be the first to establish a baseline record for the Antarctica Cup, Fedor Konyukhov has noted extreme iceberg presence as he closes to within 1,000 miles of Cape Horn in the South Atlantic, which has forced the Antarctica Cup organisers to close the inside lane of the Racetrack for which competitors are to follow (any of the three lanes can normally be used). Designed as the only non-stop race event to remain in the Southern Hemisphere and to circumnavigate Antarctica by passing the three most notorious capes on the planet (Cape Leeuwin, Cape Horn, Cape Agulhuss).  Among the trophies in the news this week was the JJ Gilitinan International Championship (left photo), the unofficial World Championship of the 18 foot skiff class, which will be held in Europe for the first time ever in 2009. Previously held on Sydney Harbour, the 2009 event will be held in Carnac, France from the June 27 to July 5. Also, the 2008 ILCA Southern Circuit (right photo), where the Lightning fleet will be vying next week for the overall title that combines events in Savannah, GA, Miami and St Petersburg, FL. Bill Hardesty from San Diego convincingly won the 81-boat Etchells Midwinters in Miami, FL last weekend, the final of four events that counts for the Jaguar Cup Series, which Hardesty also won. The winning team from left: Ed Adams (coach), Steve Hunt, Mary Ann Ward, Jennifer Wilson, Hardesty, and Eric Shampain.  Casey Schnoor sent in this photo from the San Diego to Puerto Vallarta race, which finished last weekend. Onboard Andy Rasdal's DK46 Valkyrie, Casey shares a memory of sunrise off of Cabo San Lucas.
