The Grand Traverse Yacht Club in Traverse City, MI caught fire around eleven-thirty Wednesday night, and was deemed a total loss by Thursday morning. Said 'butthead Eric Lind. "It is truly a sad day with 42 years of memories up in smoke. Lots of tears were shed in the parking lot today, but there were lots of smiles as well. We have an extremely strong membership with lots of talent and the plans were already being talked about this morning as the sun came up and the fire was still burning. We are all excited about the prospects of rebuilding, but we will have to wait until the fire investigators are through and the insurance company renders a verdict. The community outpouring has already begun with offers of space and other resources. The good news is that nobody was in the building and that no boats were damaged. Our first race is in a couple of weeks and we will maintain a full schedule this Summer including the Interlake Nationals in August, our Annual Melges 24 Invite, the Laser Invite, and numerous other great events."

Sailing with Hayes were crew members Nancy Heffernan, Cindy Olsen and Verian Aguilar. A total of 10 teams competed in the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) Grade 3 match-racing regatta, which was created in 2002 to improve opportunities for women sailors specifically interested in match racing. With the win, #25 world-ranked Hayes, along with second-place finisher Katy Lovell (New Orleans, La.), gained an automatic invitation into the Rolex Osprey Cup, an ISAF Grade 1 regatta, to be held October 21-25, at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club.

The 2008 Star Worlds are going on this week in Miami, FL, and local conditions have been at times "explosive." Stories of white water rivers capturing unsuspecting teams, with the wind gusts exploding the local aluminum. Photographer Marco Oquendo (www.ImagesbyMarco.com) catches Etchells World champ Jud Smith amid the recycling drive.

What are the odds of the Farr 40 Worlds also taking place this week in Miami, FL? The professional sailors involved in both classes weren't too happy, but photography Thierry Martinez loved it as his heli was able to get to both courses on the same day.

15th April 2008 - Day 80: Now safely out of the ice region, 56-year-old solo circumnavigator Fedor Konyukhov (RUS) is cracking on along what he sees as the 'home stretch' of the 16,000-mile Antarctica Cup Racetrack back to Albany, Western Australia.
