THE 2008 WORLD SUBMARINE RACING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Dynamic Stability Systems (DSS) is set to revolutionise yachting with their elegant alternative. While canting keel or water ballast systems weigh down the weather side of the boat, DSS technology works in the opposite way: it lifts a boat’s leeward side. To do this a lifting foil, much like an airplane wing, mounted just above the waterline when the boat is upright, is projected out from the leeward side of the boat. During manoeuvres the foil is slid through a case, fixed laterally across the beam of the boat down in the bilge, its opposite end immediately providing lift on the new tack. An alternative arrangement is fitting twin boards that flip back horizontally into the hull on each side. DSS is the brainchild of America’s Cup designer and foil specialist Hugh Welbourn and has been some six years in development. The foil system has since been the subject of an intense R&D program including virtual simulations, and tank testing, while Welbourn has built scale radio-controlled models and also retrofitted a lateral board to one side of an existing yacht and installed a retrofit system to another. -- www.dynamicstabilitysystems.com
