Leading Olympic Laser Radial contender Anna Tunnicliffe (USA) reports that her training in Qingdao has been going well, with sunny and foggy days and plenty of attacks from the "big green sea monsters" – whole islands of algae/seaweed scattered around Fusan Bay. Seaweed harvesting is big business along the coast and it seems that offshore storms pushed the weed into the waters from the eastern end of the course to the Olympic venue. For a week, the boats collecting the weed were everywhere, working in groups of five to seven, raking the weed alongside, and hoisting it aboard. The dock where they landed it was just outside the harbor and the boats would wait there patiently until it was their turn to enter the dropoff area. The boats had very loud diesel engines. We had one practice near the harbor entrance because the fog limited visibility to 30 meters. The whole time she could hear the thudding of diesels that contributed to the headaches they were getting from the light, choppy conditions. In retrospect, thought, she imagines it to be good practice for the helicopters that she expects during the Olympics. Photos by Mitch Brindley.

Prior to the start of the Newport Bermuda Race, the collection of top flight entrants getting ready at Newport Shipyard had created quite a buzz. Already the base camp for the PUMA Racing Team as they prep for the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race, the month of June made Newport Shipyard the place to be for all the serious yachties.

Photog Amory Ross thought he would grab a little personal time, seeking a fishing outing on Naragansett Bay in Newport, RI. However, a storm system had plans of its own, and while Amory never got the chance to drop his hook, he fortunately had his camera to catch these images.

Before the PUMA Racing Team skipper Ken Read was wearing his brand's latest red kicks (and autographing them!), he had done this dance a couple decades earlier with a pair of Chuck Taylors that were part of the crew uni during an SORC campaign. While the Converse high tops shown above aren't from Kenny's closet, Scuttlebutt publisher Craig Leweck still has his from when he sailed with Kenny in that series, and he can assure you that the PUMA skipper had a matching pair.
