We suspect the later. -- http://blog.teammb.org  The 2008 European International Championship for 18ft skiffs is underway in Six Fours, just down the road from Hyeres in the South of France, launching from the dramatically named Brutal Beach. The Championships is one of three key events, along with the North American Championships and the JJ Giltinan in Sydney that determine the class' global ranking. As a result, the European fleet was joined by a number of travellers from Australia and the US. Also joining the fleet although not competing was the Swiss Mirabaud foiling skiff (above), trying out its performance against its conventional peers. Photo by Christophe Favreau. -- http://www.18footer.org    The 2008 JP Morgan Asset Management Round the Island Race attracted nearly 1900 boats for the 50-mile course around the Isle of Wight in the UK. Photog Chris Ray provides the overhead site of the fleet, while photog Ian Roman did a ride along with TEAMORIGIN, which was the line honours winner. Ian's image demonstrating the kind of visibility that is typical onboard the Extreme 40 foot cat.  San Francisco, CA - Patrick Whitmarsh, Kevin Richards and Joe Penrod won the inaugural American Sailing League Championship off Pier 39, and with it a check for $10,000. The trio sailed Team Harken to a convincing win that saw them take the last five qualifying races leading up to the one championship race sailed for all the marbles Sunday afternoon in strengthening breeze into the low 20s. The event featured the 18-footers, as well as an exhibition event for junior sailors in 29ers picking their way through all the traffic in that busy part of the Bay.  Among the 19 classes competing last week at the Acura presents Ullman Sails Long Beach Race Week, co-hosted by the neighboring Long Beach and Alamitos Bay Yacht Clubs, were the Flying Tiger 10m that were using the event as their Pacific Coast Championship. Photo courtesy of FT10m class  The 8th Annual Sail Newport Advanced Racing Clinic in memory of Brooke Gonzalez enjoyed perfect weather and sailing conditions for this year's attendess, limited to 32 420 teams and 19 Laser Radials from as far away as Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Awards were given to the top three 420 and Radial teams and Laser Radial sailor Zach Runci (Duxbury, MA) was given the Brooke Gonzalez award. The coaches all agreed that Zach (above) best exemplified Brooke's sailing spirit and exceptional attitude. Coach and current 470 World Champion Erin Maxwell, who grew up as a friend and competitor of Brooke on Long Island Sound, gave a great speech about Brooke and presented the award. Kaitlyn Baab (Saratoga, FL) was also recognized as a finalist for the award. -- www.sailnewport.org  John Rousmaniere: "An important element of this year's Newport Bermuda Race story that has gone without much notice is illustrated in the above photo by Barry Pickthall. The second-place boat in the overall standings of the race's most important division, the St. David's Lighthouse Division, Selkie, was commanded by a woman, Sheila McCurdy (Portsmouth, R.I.), the only female skipper in the 223-boat fleet. In fact, a total of three women were in the crew of seven, each an extremely experienced offshore sailor. The other two are Anne Becker and Carol A. Vernon, both of Newport, RI. To my knowledge this is the top finish in any major ocean race by a crew with such a large proportion of women. "Sheila McCurdy and Selkie were 2nd overall in the race in 1994. Selkie, a 38.5-foot custom sloop, was designed by her father, yacht designer James A. McCurdy, of McCurdy & Rhodes. Her nephew, Morgan McCurdy, was in the crew. Much rougher than the typical Newport Bermuda Race, this one had 700-plus miles of beating into moderate to fresh southwesterlies and confused seas. McCurdy is also the first woman Vice-Commodore of the Cruising Club of America, one of the race's organizers, with the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club. For more, see my story at www.bermudarace.com."
