From a 4th of July parade in Crystal Lake, MI, the O'pen Bic proves to be as much fun on land as it is on the water.  The finals of the World Match Racing Tour event in Marstrand, Sweden found local favorite Matthias Rahm upending newcomer Torvar Mirsky (AUS), but hats off to Match Cup Sweden event for bringing the racing to the people. Photos provided by MirskyRacingTeam.   The 2008 18ft Skiff European Championships in Six-Fours-les-Plages, France brought together the fleet in this continent, plus a few strays from abroad. The European fleet now moves on to Weymouth in the UK for the next round of the European Grand Prix circuit and UK National Championship, commencing August 10th. Photo by Christophe Favreau.  Great Harbor Yacht Club (GHYC), the first private yacht club to be built on Nantucket in more than 100 years, officially broke ground on the new Clubhouse on Saturday, June 28, 2008. The SETH IFDS Multihull World Championship 2008 in Cascais, Porugal is being sailed in the Challenger trimaran, which was originally conceived by Diana Campbell. This Englishwoman, who suffered from rheumatoid arthritis and was confined to a wheelchair from the age of seven, loved sailing. In the sixties, Diana purchased a catamaran and from that concept, asked Rod Macalpine Downey to design a boat specifically for handicapped sailors that would be fast fun and safe to sail. The first Challenger (4.57 m in length) was built in 1980 by Cheesman Rollo & Co and sponsored by the RYA Seamanship Foundation.  One of the unheralded pioneers of sailing, Thora Lund Robinson (shown here dressed with keen appreciation of the dangers of UV) sailed in the very first Bermuda Race, started in 1906 off Brooklyn, N.Y. Sailing in a 28-foot LOA sloop, GAUNTLET, she legitimized offshore racing in normal, smaller boats, and so a new sport was born. To appreciate how revolutionary this race was, understand that just a year earlier, the average size of the entries in the 1905 transatlantic race was over 160 feet. -- John Rousmaniere  Twenty-seven competitors of the Tour de France Sailing Race have been battling strong winds, requiring the fleet of M 30's this week to transit a section of the course by road to insure their safe passage.    The PUMA brand has partnered with sailing clothier Team One Newport to open their first and only module sailing store in Newport, RI. Located at the Team One Newport store at 561 Thames Street, Newport, Rhode Island, the module store was opened last month in a ceremony with PUMA Ocean Racing’s Skipper, Ken Read and Martha Parker, owner and founder of Team One Newport, Inc.
