The U.S. Presidents are known for welcoming American sports figures after their accomplishments, but for the 2008 Olympics, President Bush met with select members from the various events before the Games. Here is Laser rep Andrew Campbell with Bush, and while the President has his detractors, he sure can mug for the camera. Hosted by St Francis YC in San Francisco, CA, the Laser Slalom was first launched in the early 70's, and with the great spectating and epic summer conditions, the event was known to draw some of the great matadors of the day. Photo submitted by Leslie Barkow.  It's not every day the Scuttlebutt Publisher is in Everett, WA, so a visit to the Scuttlebutt Brewing Company was a must do. Diabolical winds made for plenty of exciting stories back at the dock after the New York Yacht Club's (NYYC) sixth biennial Race Week at Newport presented by Rolex that concluded last weekend. The four-day competition had 120 boats in four classes one design classes (NYYC Club Swan 42, Melges 32, J/109 and J/105) and six handicap fleets IRC 1 and 2, PHRF 1 and 2, J/122 and Beneteau First 36.7).  Velsheda (Sail No K7), arguably one of the world’s greatest names in classic yachts, has made an historic return to Marina Project's Endeavour Quay in Gosport (UK) where she was built 75 years ago. One of only three remaining original J Class Yachts, Velsheda was built by Camper and Nicholson’s at their Gosport Shipyard in 1933 for William Stephenson, the owner of Woolworths. He named his new yacht after his three daughters Velma, Sheila and Daphne. She had a glittering racing career and won many of the major regattas around the country and raced against the most modern yachts of that time. Rescued from the upper reaches of the River Hamble in 1984 where she was used as a house boat, she started on a succession of refits but it was not until 1996 that she was completely rebuilt. Since that time, she has circumnavigated the globe and crossed the Atlantic on numerous occasions. In April 2008, she won the Spirit of Tradition Class A at Antigua Classic Regatta. After a short stay at Endeavour Quay, where her Captain and crew have carried out some underwater modifications and completed a full “wash and polish” programme, she will head off to resume her cruising and racing programme.
