US Olympic Team members Graham Biehl and Andrew Campbell hoisted a tangible reminder of all the hometown support, a banner made by the junior sailors at their club, San Diego Yacht Club (posted at campbellsailing.com)

There have been alot of comments about the sheer volume of volunteers at the Olympic sailing site in Qingdao. Here is a photo of US 470 rep Sarah Mergenthaler demonstrating the ratio of sailor to support. Comments Sarah, "They are all extremely helpful, friendly and eager to pose for pictures with the athletes. They are so organized you can barely make it from the boat to the hotel room with at least 5 different volunteers greeting you and offering their assistance....all with a big smile! Above all, they are so enthusiastic to work at the Olympic venue I can't even get over it."

Under new ownership, the J-Class ENDEAVOUR transited the Panama canal, cruised the Pacific including New Zealand and Japan and has now arrived at Qingdao. ENDEAVOUR is berthed inside the Olympic venue, where Captain Simon Lacey and his crew will be assisting the Olympic Sailing Committee operating ENDEAVOUR as a VIP vessel. Can you belive this entrant went from high and dry to podium finish in the Quebec to Saint Malo Transat 2008? They sat here for 11 hours, but rallied for the win. Read their story here.

On the Cityfront, St. Francis YC hosted the Aldo Alessio Regatta, which also functioned as the West Coast IRC Championship. The regatta featured everything from well-sailed, off-the-shelf production boats to Bill Turpin's R/P 75 Akela. With the big breeze on the bay, this 1D35 demonstrates what happens when you blink. With all the crashes and capsizes last weekend at the iShares Cup Extreme 40 catamaran event at Skandia Cowes Week in Cowes, UK, even the grey weather couldn't keep the photogs from snapping epic imagery. Here is a sequence of the BMW Oracle Racing team dipping a bow (but they did survive this one). Photos by Sander van der Borch/www.sandervanderborch.com.
