The current America's Cup defender, the Swiss Alinghi team, has posted a series of cartoons on their website that poke fun at their bitter rival, BMW Oracle Racing. This is their latest one, where the record player is skipping on the lyric, "Unfair Protocol."  Held in Boston Harbor, co-hosted by the South Boston Yacht Club and the Boston Harbor Yacht Club, the 2008 International 210 National Championship wrapped up on August 21. Russell Robinson, Bill Donald and Al Baker won the event by one point over David Robinson, Lynn Conway and Tim Broome. The team of Steve Clancy, US Sailing's Susan Epstein, and Jack Driscoll rounded out the top three of this competitive 20 boat fleet.   After their April launch and a summer of training in Newport, RI, it was time for the PUMA Ocean Racing team to head for Spain and prep for the October start of the Volvo Ocean Race. They left Newport this week, and are now dealing with their transatlantic crossing.  George Reichhelm, sailing “Shucks” out of Cedar Point Yacht Club (Westport, CT), won the Atlantic Class 80th National Championship for his 11th time (since 1971) held August 20-22 at Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club in Blue Hill, Maine. The 34-boat fleet was the largest since 1981, and marked the first time the championship was hosted by the Maine Fleet. The Class of 30-foot keelboats, designed in the 1920s, completed a five-race series over three days on Blue Hill Bay, with five different clubs represented in the top five trophy winners.  The locals in San Francisco sail in big wind... alot. Summertime is big wind time, and if you want to test yourself, "the Bay" is as good a venue as any. From Casey Woodrum: In Iowa at Lake Okoboji for the Inland Lake Yachting Association's annual championships. Six classes of scows competed with over 100 boats over six days. Lots of great action - I clocked an E-Scow on a reach doing 20kts!  The official 2012 sailing venue, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), has now hoisted a new 2012 flag, given to the Academy by the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games. This flag can be only be flown at selected 2012 venues. Following the British medal invasion in China, all their sailors will now have this constant reminder of what is to come in four years, instilling the Olympic spirit into the youth of this nation. Damn!  Excellent weather and a range of conditions from light to moderate blessed the junior sailors attending the U.S. O’pen Cup, hosted by New Bedford Community Boating Center. The Juniors enjoyed conventional buoy racing as well as “Un-Regatta” style Giant Slalom and “O’pen Cross” courses. Mandatory capsizes, stand-up sailing, and 360s were popular with the racers. Perhaps the highlight of the event for the kids was the individual and tandem freestyle competitions. New moves were broken out with spectacular “wheelies”, “hood ornaments”, creative capsizes, and dismounts stealing the show. Click here to submit your photos for consideration. |
