VO 70 PUMA Racing Team completed their crossing from Newport, RI to Alicante, Spain, and will now spend the next few weeks gearing up for the October 4th start of the Volvo Ocean Race.  Americans Nick Scandone and Maureen McKinnon Tucker leading the SKUD 18 fleet at the Paralympic Games in Qingdao, China.  The San Francisco Bay has been full of events this summer, beginning with the US Youth Championships and followed with, among others, the Laser North Americans, West Coast IRC Championship, 505 PCC's, Express 27 Nationals, Snipe Nationals and now the Moore 24 Nationals that were won by Scott Walecka/ David Hodges. Following its participation in Transpacific Yacht Club's Los Angeles to Tahiti Race, Ragtime planned to do some local cruising before continuing to New Zealand where she was originally launched as ‘Infidel' in 1964. She was in Moorea at anchor, enjoying her private cove, but later was joined by the 285-foot Maltese Falcon.   The Extreme 40 catamaran and their iShares Cup have been among the exciting European events in 2008, largely due to the involvement of America's Cup teams and the spectacular capsize images from some of their events. Here are some photos submitted by Simon Palfrader that show the class can have some glamour too.  It is not the same as being loaded onto an Antonov cargo plane and flown to Europe, but when your sponsor is Dockwise Yacht Transport, the STP65 Rosebud rides on one of its semi-submersible ships to cross the Atlantic Ocean from the US.  Island Heights Yacht Club, Island Heights, NJ hosted their 4th Annual Corrugated Cup Races on Labor Day weekend. Racing is separated into 2 divisions, junior and adult. Taking top honors this year in the Juniors is Hunter Cummin of King of Prussia, PA and Island Heights and in the adult division Stu Challoner with his son Campbell of Island Heights, NJ. The rules are simple: only cardboard and 1 roll duct tape is permitted. Boats must display a burgee or flag from their Yacht Club and no waterproofing of any kind can be used.
