The Maltese Falcon, considered to be the most technologically advanced yacht in the world, will be making its first trip to the continental United States, entering San Francisco Bay on Saturday, September 27th. Owner Tom Perkins is bringing the 289-foot yacht into the bay in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's third annual XOJET Leukemia Cup Regatta on October 4-5, 2008. Here she rests just outside the entrance in Drakes Bay. The Maltese Falcon will enter the bay at 2:00pm at low tide because the masts rise 191 feet over the water and there will only be about 20 feet clearance under the Golden Gate Bridge. This is local Newport, RI dignitary Harry Sherman after a day of sanding the bottom of his classic Knud Reimers double ended cutter "Hawk". Harry has been pulling 12 hour days 7 days a week all summer long. Poor boy needs a rest. Better yet, to sail his boat. Subission by William Tuthill.  In preparation for the start of the Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009, PUMA today unveiled PUMA City at the opening of the race's official port village in Alicante, Spain. A tour de force of architecture and design, the massive 11,000 square-foot structure is made from twenty-four, forty-foot long steel shipping containers, each weighing in at eleven tons. Built in China and designed to be a mobile unit, PUMA City was shipped to Alicante via cargo ship at the end of August and was assembled at the entrance of the race village in just two weeks. It will be open to the general public from today until mid-October when PUMA Ocean Racing's il mostro and the other competition boats depart for Cape Town, South Africa on the first leg of the nine month-long Volvo Ocean Race. Once the boats leave the port of Alicante, PUMA City will be dissembled and make its way across the Atlantic Ocean to await the arrival of the Volvo Ocean Race in Boston Harbor in April 2009. Alerions here on Nantucket Harbor before the Opera House Cup in mid August, which is one of the three big classic boat events: Edgartown Race Week, Opera House Cup, Newport Classic Yacht Regatta in late summer. Alerions are cold molded replicas built on Nantucket on the model of Capt Nat Herreshoff's own personal boat, a sea green 26 foot shoal draft day sailor that resides in Mystic Seaports collection. The Rogers 82, a new generation of Cruiser Racer combining comfort, style and high performance, is being constructed entirely from pre-preg carbon utilising the latest aerospace technologies. She is currently in build at Goetz Custom Boats, USA where she will be fitted with a Hall Spar, and expects to be launched in Spring 2010. Only one mast went down but there were quite a few wipeouts. A skipper fell out of his boat during the race, came back to finish 2nd in the next race. On the way in he wiped out again, holding on fast to the tiller, it broke off and went in the drink with him! In the worst incident of the day both team members went in the lake, less a fingertip that got wrapped up in the jib sheet, the Star sailed off on it's own for a minute or so then center punched a rock wall!
