The PUMA team with American skipper Ken Read has to be very pleased with how the first week of the Volvo Ocean Race has gone for them. Since exiting the Straits of Gibraltar, what began as light air running has developed into steady 20 knot surfing, with PUMA match racing early leader Ericsson 4 move for move, then getting passed them at the Canary Islands. Very early in a race that will take nine months, but always good to start well. Photo by Sally Collison/PUMA.

The national release this week of the Morning Light film has been preceded by several special events, which of course included a Hollywood premiere. Here is a photo from a Scuttlebutt camera phone as they cross Hollywood Blvd to attend the showing, and a photo by Phil Uhl of film producers Roy Disney and Leslie DeMeuse posing with a couple of fans at the event.

Local racing sailors from Newport Beach recognized the lack of youth missing in big boat racing so they formed a local co-ed Sea Scout Ship with a focus on big boat sailing, both with a racing and cruising program. Today, these Sea Scouts, dubbed “the Renegades” from Sea Scout Ship 90, ages 14 – 21 years of age along with adult leaders have campaigned two big boats during the last five years along with taking the yachts cruising along the California coast. Regarding the release of the Morning Light film, Sea Scout Adult Leader Tim Martin said, “Hopefully, the movie will plant a seed in other youth in our area to really get into big boat racing - and sailing in general.” http://www.sssrenegades.com

From Mark Denzer: "Soon, I will be sailing “Round Oahu by El Toro sailboat” to benefit the National Parkinson Foundation. My Dad died of Parkinson’s in July of this year, and he was always up for any crazy scheme that involved boats. So it seemed like a fitting memorial to attempt to sail an El Toro around the island in his memory, and to solicit some contributions to fight this nasty disease. Click here to the Parkinson Foundation Community Fundraiser website if you want to donate ($3.00 makes you a full sponsor, and your name goes on the sail!). Everyone’s generosity is greatly appreciated. Since this photo, we have taken the boat back to the garage for some changes, and are now waiting for the right weather to begin the route.

Scuttlebutt is a big fan of photographer Amory Ross, who is a young American with a ton of talent, and is finishing up a season of shooting in Europe. Here he is in Trieste, Italy for an RC 44 event.

Last weekend, the college crowd came to Treasure Island in San Francisco, CA for the Stoney Burke Regatta. Photos by Erik Simonson/www.h2oshots.com.
