Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week January 10-16, 2009 A random assortment of photos submitted to Scuttlebutt this week. Click here to submit your photos for consideration.  Here is a photo of Nick Ward doing some frostbite kite boarding amid a snow-capped backdrop at Golden Gardens near Seattle, WA.   Frostbiting is the only kind of sailing done by the kitewing contingent, where temperatures in the teens doesn't slow them down. The top photo is Will Tuthill flying a 4.8 mono over a frozen Lake Sunnapee in Sunnapee, NH (unknown photographer), while the lower photo is Dicky Saltonstall flying WW7.5 over Alford Lake near Union, Maine (photo by Bill Buchhol).  Even Southern California feels the winter pinch, with the fleet of competitors in the 2009 Two Gates Invitational in Long Beach, CA sailing against the backdrop of snow-capped local mountains. The Cruising Club of America has selected William (Scott) Piper III, M.D. to receive its prestigious 2008 Blue Water Medal for 12 years of adventurous cruising and voyaging in two boats, Pipe Dream VI, a J/40, and Pipe Dream IX, a 52’ J/160 (above), aboard which he has logged over 132,000 miles, for a total of 180,000 miles. The medal was presented at the club’s annual Awards Dinner in New York on January 13, 2009 by CCA Commodore Ross Sherbrooke, of Boston, Mass.  From Ellen Sanpere: "Happy New Year from St. Croix, USVI. We now have a J-36 to race in the regattas in the Virgin Islands, and that means practice practice practice. This photo shows our new red wind-seeker, a 3/4 oz. 120% headsail on Cayennita Grande (a big, little pepper) as we sail downwind back to Christiansted harbor. It's a tough job, sailing down here in January, but somebody's got to do it. The St. Croix Int'l Regatta will be Feb. 20-22, with a Cruzan Rum kick-off on Feb. 20th and gobs of racing on the 21st and 22nd. Two winning skippers will get their weight in rum. See: www.stcroixregatta.com for regatta details and info on the Valentine Opti regatta, run concurrently. The winning Opti skipper will get his/her weight in sports drinks."  The Zhik Australian International Moth Championship is on for next week, and it has attracted a lot of attention. Over 40 entries from 7 countries, including current Moth World Champion John Harris, Australian Junior Moth Champion James Owen-Smith, US National Champion Bora Gulari, the Swiss National Champion Arnaud Psarofaghis, New Zealand's National Champion Andrew Brown, and newcomer to the class Nathan Outteridge (above), the 49er World Champion.   Good thing that old America's Cup class boats don't take up much space when you are not sure what to do with them.
