The 2009 O’pen BIC “Un-Regatta” Mid Winters once again turned up the fun meter for hot-shot Opti racers and newbie sailors alike. Held at Shake-A-Leg Miami in conjunction with the Caviglia Classic, this was not your grandfather’s regatta. Kids enjoyed the unorthodox courses, compulsory freestyle moves, downwind slalom, and the “Expression Sessions”.

Brian Thompson, who is currently nearing the end of the solo, non-stop, round the world yacht race, the Vendée Globe on board his boat ‘Bahrain Team Pindar’, was determined not to miss out on his wife’s birthday celebrations, despite being in the middle of the Atlantic. As a romantic birthday surprise, he organised for musicians from the Royal Marines Association to deliver gifts and serenade Nathalie with ‘Happy Birthday’ on the doorstep of their family home, accompanied by a life sized cardboard cut out of himself.

From Alan Hughes, Cape Town: I'm a yachtie who sails out of the Royal Cape Yacht Club in Cape Town, and assisted in line-handling when Mike Perham came alonside at about 12h40 today, Sunday 02 February 2009. The Club had sent out the Butt-Cat with the Marina Manager Dave Dickenson at the helm with Mike's father, the BBC cameraman and Tommy Walker, the Mr Fix-It of the RCYC who is to attend to the repairs required. After we made fast, Mike and his father and friends went to the RCYC veranda for a drink, interviews and to meet Zac Sunderland, who is also in Cape Town doing repairs on his yacht Intrepid, before setting off to the Caribbean. Both Mike and Zac (with hat) are seeking to become the youngest solo sailor to circle the globe (with stops). Keep up the good work, as I subscribe to your daily newsletter.

Derby Anderson is in Auckland, New Zealand for the Louis Vuitton Pacific Series, but before getting to work on her writing assignment for Sailing World, she took a drive up to this high point in the Bay of Islands, noting that it is "Probably the most gorgeous scenery I have ever seen!" Also shown is the racing area on Waitemata Harbor off Auckland.

Below are some images of Vendee Globe 2008-09 finish of winner Michel Desjoyeaux (FRA) on “FONCIA”, establishing a new race record of 84 days, 3 hours, 9 minutes and 8 sec. Desjoyeaux also won the Vendee Globe race in 2000/01. Photos by Thierry Martinez"
