Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week

Last week marked the unfortunate one year anniversary of Joe Mello’s yacht rigging business burning to the ground (entire story in Scuttlebutt 2536). Rigging Solutions LLC has since been rebuilt, and today the fire seems to be a distant memory. Everyone at Rigging Solutions is very thankful for all of the loyal customers and supportive suppliers that helped make this return possible. This picture seems very fitting as one year later Mr. Mello and Rigging Solutions are back doing what they do best! Photo by Peter Pereira (www.peterpereira.com)

Corinthian Yacht Club of San Francisco concluded their Midwinter series last weekend, and as the photo shows, the bay can show its kinder, gentler side when the summer heat isn't stirring up the big thermal conditions. Photo by Erik Simonson.

Photo taken at the St Pete NOOD, the Melges 24 Carmelita is owned by J.A. Booker, a frequent Scuttlebutt contributor and a past Commodore of West Florida PHRF. With two kids very accomplished in Opti’s, J.A.’s wife Stacie (also on-board in photo) is the editor of the U.S.Optimist class newsletter. Also aboard, is Gail Hausler, a past Sunfish Women’s National Champion. Photo by Richard Karran.

A new race was launched this week in Antigua, the RORC Caribbean 600, which saw Mike Slade’s 100ft Maxi, ICAP Leopard complete the route on Feb. 25th to set the monohull elapsed time for future yachts to beat. With a crew of 21, a case of beer doesn't go too far. Photo by Tim Wright.

Travel a little further south in the Caribbean, and Slade's boat might look a little goofy when compared to some of the local boats that ply those waters. Here is a classic photo from Martinique taken by Alex W. Larsen.

Kitewing sailor Cam Lewis showing what can be done with ice skates on Lake Megunticook in Camden, Maine. Anybody have a photo of a kitewing used with a skateboard or rollerblades? Photo by Richard Saltonstall.

The solo Vendee Globe around the world race sailors often complained about getting smacked by random flying fish, but they never mentioned anything like this. From the famed Newport Beach, CA to Ensenada, MX Race, here is a reminder that sometimes the 125 nm route is not just about racing. This guy decided to hitch a ride about ten miles off Dana Point on one of the boats, and spent the next seven hours sleeping and barking at the crew. Photo by Jim Updike.

Maybe the Thistle class should consider this doorway as a new measurement jig for validating hull dimensions. The Thistle is the Rochester Canoe Club's fleet boat that was restored in a big room with a small door. Photos by Bill Dexter.
