The Scuttlebutt poll this week inquired about the standard for Trophy Banquet Dress Code. Dwight Gertz submitted this photo of Lightning Fleet skippers from the annual dinner in Squam Lake, New Hampshire as proof that every event does not neatly fit into a dress code category.

Submitted by Peter (Butthead) Wirth, President USIFA: "This year Davis Island Yacht Club was host to two Fireball events during the week of March 9-15. Beginning on Monday the 2009 United States National Championships were held followed by the 44th annual Fireball and Friends Mid-winters Regatta on Friday through Sunday. Crews from Pennsylvania, Colorado, Ottawa, Halifax, Calgary, and Victoria as well as the local Floridian group made up a diverse group of both male and female Fireballers from Canada and the U.S. Pat Crump using Andrew Davies (U.K.) as his crew sailed an unusually inconsistent series but managed to capture both the National and Mid-winter crown from a field of very competitive Fireballers. We bid farewell to Pat Crump’s presidency and welcomed in Peter Wirth as his replacement. Warm weather, warm friends, and great sailing makes Davis Island the place to be in March."

The Scuttlebutt story about sunscreen should be a big help once the sailing season kicks in for the northern hemisphere. Here is a photo from the Yachting Western Australia newsletter showing a youth sailor who is completely committed to sunscreen application.

Here is the 12 meter Columbia ~ US 16 from photographer Dan Nerney, reminding us that this class of boat will once again grace the shores of Newport, RI for the 12 Metre World Championships, to be held September 22-27. Click here for full details.

Geneva, 3 April 2009 – After two years of development and hard work, the SYZ & CO hydrofoil catamaran took off yesterday for its maiden flight in a northerly breeze averaging 13 knots on the slightly choppy waters of Lake Léman and has demonstrated its striking manner the validity of its concept. The next weeks will be devoted to tuning up in order to be ready for the main races of the season. To allow the public to follow project developments, a web site is now available (www.syzfoiler.com).

Dick Allphin provided these "racing" images of homemade Shellback dinghys off Jamestown, RI on a calm March day.

Photographer Peter Lyons was on Ivanpah Dry Lake at Primm, NV during the NALSA Pacrim 2009 Championships and America's Landsailing Cup Regatta. It was during this event (on March 26th) when Richard Jenkins, a mechanical engineer from England, took his Greenbird to 126.4 mph to set a new land speed record The previous record was set by Bob Schumacher in 1999 of 116.7 mph in the Iron Duck.
