The 148,000 dwt tanker Hellespont Trooper has rescued the crew of a dismasted yacht in the Southern Ocean. Two Italian nationals were rescued safe and well from the 34ft yacht Onitron at 1800 GMT on April 8th. The vessel was alerted by New Zealand and Chilean authorities on April 5th and asked to divert to the yacht, which had lost mast and power in a remote area of the Southern Ocean, about 3,500 miles West of the Southern tip of South America. Submitted by John Payne, here we see top ranked Olympic Laser sailors Brad Funk (USA) and Nick Thompson (GBR) "training" in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. On why Nick (lower photo) was training with Brad, he explains, “Brad was great as a training partner as he has a lot of experience, great boat speed and has a great outlook on life. He is always keen to try new ideas on the water, which would often lead to some interesting exploits, such as hiking off a balance ball in our Lasers."

Charlie Bergstedgt shows us that even the sturdy Cal 20 can benefit from some extra hiking. Shot was taken during the Singlehanded Sailing Society's Corinthian Regatta on 11 April 2009.

Ambersail, a Volvo 60 sailboat (formerly known as Assa Abloy), arrived this week in New York, and is sailing around the world as part of the "Millennium Odyssey" project. In the year 1009, Lithuania's name appeared for the first time in writing in The Annuals of Quedlinburg, Germany. To celebrate this Millennium, the Lithuanian Yacht Club's Amerbsail is sailing around the world and visiting Lithuanian Communities in 19 countries. Their mission is to unite the Lithuanians all over the world.

Boatspeed Australia, a high tech boatbuilding company based in Somersby on the Central Coast of NSW, has nearly completed the building of yet another state of the art 105 ft trimaran yacht. This yacht is one of the new Arabian 100 Class bound for Oman in Middle East. The yacht has been sent as components to Oman where it will be assembled. A number of Boatspeed staff will fly out in approximately a month to carry out the assembly alongside apprentices from Oman Sail.

Despite the decision of the NY Courts, the America's Cup defender Alinghi team is still not ready to embrace their new Challenger of Record for the 33rd America's Cup, the BMW Oracle Racing team. As shown in this cartoon on the Alinghi website, they depict the BOR team as blocking progress of the multi-challenger event they had been planning.
