The 2009 version of the Mirabaud LX, Thomas Jundt’s foiler has a new hull that favours speed and stability by light wind. Its mast has also been reinforced in order to improve the upwind sailing angle, as well as the reactivity of the boat. Finally, the sensors used to trim the foiler’s flaps have been improved, allowing a better precision whilst sailing. Introduced in 2008 as “the boat with no hull”, the Mirabaud LX has recently proved that this wording could be translated into reality by sailing on its hydrofoils with no buoyancy at all. Thomas Jundt and his team have accomplished this challenge and validated a different and creative way to consider the sport of sailing.

The Save On Foods Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race, celebrating its tenth anniversary, is designed in a series of 10 legs around Vancouver Island, and timed to coincide with the currents through Seymour Narrows and Johnstone Strait, just North of Campbell River. Seymour Narrows has some of strongest currents in the world at times reaching 16 knots. "When we were designing the race back in 1999 we needed a place to stop in Johnstone Strait between two of the legs, Campbell River and Telegraph Cove," says Event Manager, Janine Bell. While the distances between these two legs aren't that great, the currents are strong enough that the boats might make it 3/4 of the way only to be swept back to where they started. "So, we approached the BC Salmon Farmers Association and Marine Harvest Canada and they offered to host the boats at their Salmon Farm near Hardwicke Island (above), which basically split the difference between the two legs." This year's Save On Foods Van Isle 360 International Yacht Race departs Nanaimo Harbour on June 6 at 1030 am. For more information log onto www.vanisle360.com”

Record breaking yachtsman Alex Thomson has been making the most of HUGO BOSS being back in the water and enjoying some 'foiling' off his IMOCA Open 60 in the Solent.

Last week the 2009 J/24 World Championships in Annapolis, MD dealt with its share of crummy conditions... mostly light winds and strong currents. Here is one team as they wait out a storm on Thursday. Photo by Sailgroove.org.

The crack crew of Bridgid Murphy and Kate Fairclough from Puma Ocean Racing sent in these images from the Volvo Ocean Race stopover in Boston, where 2008/9 Vendee Globe winner Michel Desjoyeaux checks in to see how the VO 70 compares to his Open 60, and skipper Kenny Read (left) and Jerry Kirby show their Mother's Day banner, proving once again that sometimes it is better to beg for foregiveness than to ask permission. When the wind forecast in Boston called for 25 knot winds, the Pro-Am race last Sunday for the Volvo Ocean Race provided the invited guests with the thrill of a lifetime. With only six crew aboard from each team, the VO 70s were full of smiles as they paced in front of the city skyline. Photo by Leighton O'Connor.

There is the saying, "Behind every great man there's a great woman". Then there is the saying,"Behind every great skipper there's a great crew". Here we catch the crew work for Augie Diaz, who at the age of 52 won the 2003 Snipe World championship and was recognized that year by US SAILING as the Rolex Yachtsman of the Year. Augie hasn't slowed down a beat, racing Snipes last weekend in Ft Lauderdale, FL at the Ron Payne Memorial Snipe regatta. Photo by John Payne.
