Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week October 9-15, 2009 A random assortment of photos submitted to Scuttlebutt this week. Click here to submit your photos for consideration.   Like they’ve been doing every Columbus Day weekend for nine years, Storm Trysail along with Larchmont Yacht Club (NY) once again introduced the joys of big-boat racing to boatloads of college sailors in a two-day mini course with maxi impact. Held October 10-11 on Long Island Sound, the 2009 Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta, which has become the largest college regatta in the U.S., hosted 31 schools and 40 teams racing in five divisions on boats ranging from J/44s to J/105s. With Weather Gods smiling, the young sailors -- 327 of them to be exact – competed against each other on teams and with mentors (owners who donated their boats for the cause and served as coaches and safety officers) in brisk 18-22 knot breezes on Saturday and a more forgiving 10-15 knots on Sunday. Six windward-leeward, twice-around races were sailed. Pictured above is the URI Sailing Team, which received the Hoffman Trophy for overall victory at the 2009 Intercollegiate Offshore Regatta. Photo credit: Photoboat.com.   Strong wind conditions on Wednesday attracted SYZ & CO in an attempt to break the 1 km speed record. Sailing out of the Société Nautique de Genève's harbor, she was flying at 30 knots when she hit a rogue wave and the fore portion of her starboard hull suddenly snapped. Click here for more photos.  On November 16th the square topsail schooner Lynx, “America’s Privateer,” will depart San Diego, California for the East Coast via the Panama Canal. She is scheduled to arrive in mid-January at her new winter quarters at the Palm Beach Maritime Museum in West Palm Beach, Florida. Ahlbrand, Vice Commodore, Lansing Sailing Club: "Here are some shots from the 2009 MSU Cedar-Fest Regatta on Lake Lansing. 24 teams from 12 Midwestern Colleges and Universities attended this event hosted by the Michigan State University Sailing Club. These kids sailed hard and aggressive for 2 days in cold and often rainy conditions. It was some of the best racing I have seen in quite a while."   The Melges 24 Worlds will be in Annapolis, MD in late October, and Scuttlebutt will be posting countless images from that event. The fleet is already ramping up, with a practice event hosted last weekend on Chesapeake Bay by Sail22. Spotted in the event's photo gallery was Morgan Reeser, who looks to have found a nice station for the blast reaches, and Dave Ullman providing coaching support.
