Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week October 23-29, 2009 A random assortment of photos submitted to Scuttlebutt this week. Click here to submit your photos for consideration.  When we named our sailing publication 'Scuttlebutt', we knew the word had been around for awhile. So far we have met the Scuttlebutt Brewing Company in Everett, WA, and now here is Scuttlebutts Fine Dining in Rochester, NY.  Yes, this photo came to Scuttlebutt along with a press release from Dockwise Yacht Transport’s (DYT), but it is still pretty cool. This is the 556-foot Super Servant 4, which will leave Newport, R.I. next week with a record load of 50 recreational cruising and racing boats worth upward of $41 million. The ship will be heading to Freeport, Bahamas where it will unload eight of the vessels (six motor yachts, one sport fishing boat and one sailboat), then carry on to St. Thomas, USVI, where the remaining vessels (17 motor boats and 25 sailboats) will disembark in time for the Caribbean boating season. Italy’s Giulia Conti won the 2009 Rolex Osprey Cup – one of only two ISAF Grade 1 women’s match racing events in the U.S. – held at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club (St. Petersburg, Fla.), from October 21-24. Along with crew Lisa Lardani, Alessandra Angelini and Giovanna Micol, Conti (Toscolano Maderno, Italy) defeated Anna Tunnicliffe (Plantation, Fla.) in the ‘first to win three’ final match format. A total of 111 matches were run by Principal Race Officer Pat Seidenspinner on Tampa Bay for the four-person teams sailing in Sonar class keelboats.  Now we know why all the Harken ads have been saying "Buy one Get one at Half off October 1st though November 30th 2009". Announced at the US Sailboat Show in early October, this is Harken's new winch design that is lighter, smarter, sexier, and more satisfying than ever before (or something like that). Time to clear out the old inventory to make way for the new model.  Here’s the U.S. Navy's new triple-hulled ship launched last month, the U.S.S. Independence. Built by General Dynamics, it's called a "littoral combat ship" (LCS), and the tri-maran can move huge weapons around faster than any ship in the Navy. Littoral means close to shore, and that's where these fleet-hulled babies will operate, tailor-made for launching helicopters and armored vehicles, sweeping mines and firing all manner of torpedoes, missiles and machine guns. These ships were designed to be relatively inexpensive this one's a bargain at $208 million and the navy plans to build 55 of them. This tri-maran is the first of the new fire-breathing breed, ready to scoot out of dry dock at a rumored 60 knots. It's like a speedy and heavily-armed aircraft carrier for helicopters. -- Phil Smithies  William Tuthill needs to live on a glacier, because he gets so excited when winter arrives. He somehow took this photo outside of Calgary while drooling over the new season.  It’s been awhile since we have posted any of the imaginative photos from Don Allen, but he broke through with another one of his design breakthroughs for the Alinghi 5 catamaran. Said Don, “How many think this concept can be faster than the BOR 90 trimaran? More sail area down low plus easier to carry equals more power that does not add too much to tilt.” If we actually see this in February 2010, we can all say that we saw it first on Scuttlebutt.
