Brad Van Liew is one step closer to competing in his third solo round-the-world race, this time aboard an Open 60 raceboat for the Velux 5 Oceans Race. Brad has just purchased Pro-Form (ex-Whirlpool, ex-Tiscali), and her pedigree includes first place in the 1999 Fastnet Race and 2nd in the important Transat Jacques Vabre that same year. Pro-Forms was built in 1998 for Catherine Chabaud and was subsequently sailed by Simone Bianchetti and later Marc Thiercelin, and she sports a carbon/Nomex hull, twin daggerboards and rudders, a canting keel, more than 5,000 square feet of sail on a 95- foot mast, and an ultra-light displacement of just 8.5 tons. Photos by Billy Black and Thierry Martinez.

What kind of photo helps to sell a boat: one which shows the boat under sail, or one that may fill a dream of boat ownership. For the 2009 75' Tripp Maxi Dolphin for sale in Antigua, both look pretty good.

When American skiff stud Howie Hamlin isn't going fast on the water, he is flying his heli for local surf shooters. For the cali boarder, winter is when the swells hit, which is a good enough reason for Hamlin to get airborne for this recent Surfline aerial photo session of San Diego and South Orange County. A press conference for the New York-Barcelona Transoceanic Sailing Record was held this week at the Barcelona Town Hall. The regatta will start at the Ambrose Light mark at Sandy Hook, New Jersey between April 5th and the 12th and will arrive at the W Hotel in the port of Barcelona between April 20th and the 30th. The exact departure date will be determined by weather conditions that the sailors consider most suitable for the fastest crossing. Besides the NYC Sports Commission, the project involves the New York Yacht Club and the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona. The IMOCA 60s Estrella Damm and W Hotels will compete in the 3900 nautical miles dash, with Estrella Damm to be crewed by Alex Pella, Pepe Ribes and North American sailor Stan Schreyer and W Hotels by Pachi Rivero, Javier Sansó and Peter B. Becker.
