A new sailing reference time between New York and Barcelona was set this week by Estrella Damm's co-skippers Alex Pella, Pepe Ribes and Stan Schreyer. Photographer John Navas captures the re-start of the Clipper 09-10 Round The World Yacht Race leg in San Francisco, where the nine 68-foot boats will continue on through the Panama Canal to the leg finish in Jamaica.  While the economic downturn has hit the marine industry particularly hard, those sharpshooters at Harken Yacht Equipment anticipated the slump and diversified into cruise ship business. Here is their flagship, named after company founders Peter and Olof Harken, in port at the British Virgin Islands last March.  From Dave Elliott, St. John's, NL, Canada: "While it is still a little over a week before the 2010 launch officially begins at our club (May 1st), and there was a couple of inches of snow on the ground just last week, it didn't stop these two proud new boat owners from getting in a little dry land training. After buying up a Opti for our daughters, Beth and Laura, they couldn't wait to check it out in the backyard."  At the Star Western Hemisphere Championship last week in Nassau, Bahamas, Ian Coleman and Joe McCorkell joined the DNF club when their upper back stay broke.  While the International Moth can look pretty cool when up on foils, the start line for class events can look pretty haphazard. Some boats will be up on foils, some won't be, control can be iffy, and in this photo from the California State Championship, capsizes happen.  The Coral Reef Cup was a breezy Miami Etchells regatta won by the KGB, owned by Ben Kinney, Colin Gordon and Senet Bischoff. (That is where the KGB comes from). But it was not all smooth sailing for the team, as they had to overcome the absence of Ben who opted to stay in CT with wife Megan to await the birth of their first baby. Good thing Ben is a partner in the boat, as he may have been intimidated by his replacement: class world champ Jud Smith (right side of photo).  For Lunenburg Yacht Club sailors Daniel Baker and Adam Taylor, early training for the 2010 season in Nova Scotia, Canada means water temperature of 34 degrees F and air temperatue of 53 F... on land. She was chilly but the boys are already starting to train for the 2010 Youth Worlds to be held in Turkey in July.  For the professional sailing teams, is there a league office where they have to submit their team colors? It wouldn't be right if there were teams wearing similar uniforms.
