The first press conference for the 34th America's Cup was held Thursday in Rome. Representing defender Golden Gate Yacht Club was Russell Coutts (center), who was joined by Challenger of Record Vincenzo Onorato, owner of the Mascalzone Latino team (right). As for the guy on the left, that is Cam Lewis who acted as master of ceremony, apparently building on a new media career that was launched by his fine job as commentator during the 33rd Match. The next event for aspiring America's Cup programs will be in Italy later this month as Sardinia prepares to host ten teams at the Louis Vuitton Trophy La Maddalena from May 22 through June 6. The teams will race on four equalised America's Cup Class boats supplied by the event, two of which are BMW Oracle yachts that are seen here arriving in the Med from Auckland, NZL.  The intrigue this week in how dominant USVI sailors were at the College Coed Dinghy Western and Eastern Semifinal National Championships led Brad Dellenbaugh to send in this photo by Dan Nerney. Said Brad, "Here's a photo with Thomas Barrows (2nd in A at the Westerns) - back left, Cy Thompson (1st in A at the Westerns) - back middle, and Taylor Canfield (1st in B at the Easterns) - front left - when they were in high school and USVI teammates competing in the 2005 ISAF Team Racing Worlds at NYYC in Newport, RI. Pretty good future team, eh?" As for the man in the upper right of the photo, that is Carlos Aguilar who was crewing on the team. Carlos died in 2007, but had been a long time mentor and youth sailing supporter.  Seventy teams are participating in the 2010 Fireball World Championships held this week in Barbados, West Indies. Photo by Urs Hardi.  With her foils retracted, l’Hydroptère was relaunched this week in Lorient, France to prepare for her European offshore sailing campaign this year.
