The Foxer has become an iconic symbol of sailing in England’s Hamble River. Naval architect, David Thomas (designer of the Sigma 33, Hunter 707 and BT Global Challenge yachts.) decided to create a yacht tender that can be rowed, motorised or sailed. However, he probably never intended that his creation would be raced by national, international and world champion sailors. The Foxer has become very fashionable amongst leading sailors who live in the Hamble area, with this year’s Foxer Nationals won by Ian Southworth, helm of Gruntle and multiple J 24 European Champion.

From Leighton O'Connor: "Not sure if this one makes the cut for photo of the week. I was doing a photo shoot on board 'The Cone of Silence' (a Reichel Pugh 30) during a PHRF race in Boston Harbor. I took a break from shooting to do a little sailing. Losing it behind me is the skipper Doug Mitchell. The boat has a reputation for on board craziness and she lives up to her reputation all the time."

Groupe Picoty - the first Finot-Conq Design Class40 Pogo S from Structures Chantier Naval - successfully underwent a 180 degree inversion test at Bénodet in Brittany. This unassisted self-righting test with the two crew on board is a fundamental requirement of the double-handed Global Ocean Race 2011-12 (GOR).

Don't call 911, the Coast Guard or the harbor patrol - this faux sinking yacht only LOOKS like it's halfway to Davy Jones' locker, which is the whole point of the exercise. Below the waterline, the ship's form follows its function with a combination keel & rudder, and a propeller to provide motive power as it doesn't seem to carry sails - just masts.

We are not sure what the class rules are in the RC44, but this looks like an expanded view of Etchells racing. Narrow boat needs crew weight, but without hiking straps or trapeze harnesses, the crew hand holds whatever lines are available to get their weight outboard. Messy, but effective. From Dave Carroll: “The Lido 14 fleet in Marina del Rey, CA has a tradition of having a fun race at the end of the regatta, and race chairman Bruce Fleck decided to end it with a bang - literally. When the first boat finished, he fired a shotgun in the air, which prompted the arrival of four sheriffs and swat squad members. Bruce was cornered at the dock, chastised and released.”
