Scuttlebutt Photos of the Week June 26 - July 1, 2010 Here is a random assortment of photos from the sport this week. Click here to submit your photos for consideration.  The excitement surrounding the foiling Moth is justified. Watching a Moth silently sail a few feet above the water is mesmerizing. But the boat is pretty extreme, and not a perfect fit for everyone, so what a surprise it was then to see one in the San Diego West Marine store. Talk about going mainstream!  Since the introduction of Women's Match Racing as an Olympic event, the US has ramped up in a big way. There are now multiple training centers, new events, and the legitimate outlook for an Olympic medal. America's Cup winner BMW Oracle Racing has been on travelling the east coast of the US, which included a covert trip to the White House. Or at least the team did not want this information released until after meeting the US President on Tuesday. It was therefore a surprise for CNET reporter Daniel Terdiman when he came upon team president and Oracle CEO Larry Ellison on Tuesday while visiting the local memorials, seen here posing for a photo being taken by his assistant. CNET was rebuffed in their attempts to learn what Ellison was doing in Washington, but now we all know. By the way, the wheel in the team photo is the port wheel of USA 17 that Jimmy Spithill was driving with when the team crossed the finish line to win Race 2 and the 33rd America's Cup.  Even though American Gold Medalist Anna Tunnicliffe has swithched her focus from the Laser Radial to the Women's Match Race event, she still checks in with the singlehander as she will next week when the Laser Radial World Championships are held in Largs, Scotland on July 6-25. This photo by US coach Luther Carpenter provides a telling example of what it takes to excel in the boat: hike from the toes, legs near straight, steady tiller hand, upper body out, and eyes looking forward.  The Tour de France á la Voile is underway, which follows the concept of the famous bike race, where sailing teams travel the coastline of the country. For skipper Rob Greenhalgh and his Oman Sail-Renaissance team, they incurred that most horrible feeling when the keel converts from lifting foil to hand brake. Said Rob, “Unfortunately, shortly after the start we hit a sand back and got stuck aground for about six minutes as we watched the fleet sail away. Eventually, we got free but we then hit the top of an unmarked wreck, coming to a grinding halt from a boat speed of about seven knots!” An all-night repair job got the team back into the race.  Whoever conceived of the Superyacht Cup series deserves whatever wealth comes his/her way. Bringing the sexiest sail boats to glamourous venues, which then brings together their sexy and glam people, was a stroke of genius. It makes the photos better, and assuming that it is good gear, insures a consistent level of protection amongst the crew. Of course, this is an additional cost to the owner, and additional management from the boat captain. Once again, there is no free lunch.
