There were stories in Scuttlebutt this week detailing how Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay was not a permanent land mass, but instead was merely anchored in place. This photo from Bruce Stone shows what happens when the anchor lines get slack at low tide.

From Genny Tulloch (USA): "We had a very fun final day at the ISAF Women's Match Racing Worlds in Newport. Since we had already secured 5th place, our final race didn't matter, nor did it affect our opponent's standings. So, instead of worrying about the result, we had a very fun race against Australian Katie Spithill and team. In fact, together we developed the SI's for our 'Intergalactic Match Racing Challenge', had a parking lot competitor's meeting, then headed out to the race course in costumes (at least our team did--see pic)."

Have you ever thought about the dillegence needed when rigging a symmetrical spinnaker with a logo? The logo is only on one side of the kite, so for the sponsor to get their desired explosure, the red leech tape MUST go on the left side of the boat.

When Tufts University coach Ken Legler was ordering new sails for his fleet of Larks, he expanded the main's upper girth to give the fleet more horsepower for their home waters of Mystic Lake.

Apparently the jury is out on the best configuration for three masted schooners. Here is Creole vs. Atlantic, courtesy of photographer Gilles Martin-Raget

Another photo from the US Sailing Center Sheboygan, where they re-define the meaning of "sailing into a hole".

If you were thinking of promoting your city on your boat, we wanted to remind you how big they went at the Chicago Match Race Center.

This was deemed the ‘Best Sunset Photo’ in Marinalife’s first annual Summer Photo Contest. It is beautiful, and apparently its description did not eliminate it from the contest: “Sunrise from Pavillion Beach in Ipswich, Massachusetts, looking toward Cranes Beach”. The photo was taken by Trish McGregor.
