The Weymouth Speed Week in the UK was once THE event to set speed records. The event started in 1973 and is the oldest running speed event in the World, making Weymouth the original home of speed sailing in its pure form. While its relevance has waned as the tools to measure speed have become more universal, it remains on the schedule as a melting pot for all sorts of craft to get a measure on each other. Thomas Jundt and his foiler Mirabaud LX were the winning entrant in the “sailboat” category, achieving a run at 23.24 knots average over the 500 meter course, and reached a top speed of 25.8 knots. This J/22 was pimped out with additional power and easier single-handed sailing. Additions included a J/80 style sprit, an assymetrical kite and a 135% roller furling genoa. Click here for details.

With four fleets sailing every Sunday during the summer, it can be tight quarters on Lake Hopatcong, NJ. The E-Scows with the asyms don't have much visibility so when they're flying their kites, cross them at your peril! Photo from Dean Lennox.
