In a tribute to the Memorial Day U.S. holiday (May 30, 2011), here is a photo of former Lauderdale Yacht Club (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) Opti and Laser sailor, J.D. Rulien, presently in Iraq on a short sabbatical from sailing. His father reports, "JD's doing what he wants to do and is very proud to be in uniform serving our country. He is one of many serving our nation in harm's way and keeping us safe; I can assure you he would not have any other way." Said JD, “I found a good spot for LYC's first Forward Operating Base... on the Tigris River. The Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA) is the venue for the sailing competition at the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games.  The double-handed team of Peter Rugg (New York, N.Y.) and Dudley Nostrand (Hamilton, Mass.) aboard the J/105 Jaded turned in the best overall performance at the Storm Trysail Club’s 2011 Block Island Race. Photo credit: Marcy Trenholm/Storm Trysail Club  The Platu 25 is Design #316 (May 1995) from the Farr Yacht Design offices, and was designed as a moderated cost, fast, but easily handled, one design club racer. This week 46 boats are competing in the Platu 25 World Championship in Gmunden, Austria. Photo by Jesus Renedo.   The Farr 40 North American Championship was held ast week in Long Beach, CA. While sponsors showed the racers a good time on land, spring winds kept them busy on the water. Photos by Rich Roberts  Continuing on the recent Scuttlebutt thread about youth only sailing events, pictured here at the 2006 Snipe U.S. National Championship is seventeen year old Wilson Stout skippering with his dad Alex crewing. “Nothing has ever been as gratifying as crewing for my son's and doing well in national competition,” said Alex. “In the boat, who's paying the bills and who didn't clean up their room doesn't mean $#!T. Clean slate, level playing field. I suggest it to everyone.” Photo by Fried Elliott.  Maintaining existing classes helps to preserve participation in the sport, and the Dubai International Marine Club in the UAE does this with the 60ft traditional dhow. Here they are seen last weekend in the Al Gaffal long distance race, which marks the end of their sailing season. Racing will commence again - when the weather cools off - in September.
