The sailing season for the 18-foot skiff has moved from Australia to Europe for the Mark Foy Trophy regatta, one of two events that the class deems its most prominent. Twenty-six teams from seven countries are competing this week for the title in Sonderborg, Denmark. Photo by Christophe Favreau.

Giant octopus tentacles grip hold of PUMA’s Mar Mostro entry in the 2011-12 Volvo Ocean Race. The red tentacles encircle the boat, merging into the PUMA formstrip on the port and starboard sides, and popping against a black backdrop of stingray-influenced scales. The headsails and mainsail feature the new PUMA “Aqua Cat,” a liquid explosion of the iconic PUMA cat emerging from the waves. Additionally, surprise aqua details ranging from an octopus with the caption “All Hands on Deck” to a skull and crossbones pop up in hidden spots across the boat in a hugely detailed and unconventional scheme that was handpainted onto the hull.

The International One Design class fleet in Marblehead, MA will welcome guests from all the World Class Fleets this week for the IOD World Championship. Nearly 20 boats will be competing with many of them built of wood from before World War II through the early 1960s. Photo by Tripp Alyn.

Competing in sailing for only the pickle dishes can miss out on great memories. The sailing is just filler for times like this, where we see U.S. Finn luminaries (L-to-R) Ed Baird, Jimmy Hahn, Dave Buemi, and Jim Kirk at the 1978 Finn Gold Cup in Manzanillo, Mexico. Photo by Mark Powell.

The Master Mariners Benevolent Association held its annual parade/regatta on the the SF Bay last weekend with 100 pre-WWII sailing craft registered in 14 classes. Click here for more photos by Erik Simonson.

Launched in autumn 2010, Hydroptere.ch is part of a complete scientific process. As a lab boat, her main purpose is to test geometries and behaviours in varied real conditions for the development of l’Hydroptère maxi, which is envisioned to tackle ocean speed records.
