Photo by Erik Simonson  Without doubt the favourite in the Finn event at the 2012 Olympics will be Ben Ainslie (GBR). If he wins in Weymouth he will go down in history as the most successful sailor ever at the Olympic Games, taking that accolade from another Finn great, Paul Elvstrøm (DEN).  And when Ben is done with his Olympic thing, he will flying straight to San Francisco to join these chaps on the AC45 to race in the America's Cup World Series event. British sailor Alex Thomson's program might not be long on competitive sucess, but he is quite possibly king of commercial promotion. This week his photos were sent out to the universe as he seeks to break the single-handed Transatlantic record, officially known as the ‘West to East Ambrose Lighthouse to Lizard Point Under 60ft Single-Handed Monohull Record, Male’. The record sits at 10 days, 55 minutes and 19 seconds, and was set by Swiss sailor Bernhard Stamm 10 years ago.  Dropping headsails looks more dramatic in black and white. Photo taken at the RC44 Sweeden Cup by HEESEN/Carlo Borlenghi  The Australian 18 Footers League will launch its 2012-2013 Season on Sydney Harbour in October.  l’Hydroptere DCNS, current holder of the one mile world speed record of 50.17 knots, is in Los Angeles and now on standby for a transpacific record attempt to Hawaii. They’ll be attempting to beat the record set in 2005 by Olivier de Kersauson, at the helm of the 111-foot trimaran Geronimo, which covered the 2,215 nautical miles separating the Fermin Point lighthouse to the South-West of Los Angeles, from the Diamond Head lighthouse offshore of Honolulu, in a time of 4 days, 19 hours and 31 minutes, at an average speed of 19.17 knots.
