Scuttlebutt Poll:
2012 Olympic Events

Background...
When the slate of events for the 2012 Olympics was to be determined by ISAF last November, the requirement was to reduce the event total from the current eleven fleets down to ten. Long story short, the multihull event got eliminated. Following a significant outcry, ISAF has agreed to reconsider their event decision at their Mid-Year Meeting to take place in Qingdao, China May 8-12, 2008.

The process is not simple. The Council will be asked to reaffirm their decision on the 2012 Olympic Events made in November 2007. If a simple majority vote to affirm the decision, no changes will be made. However, should the majority of Council members vote not to reaffirm the decision, two separate votes will then follow:

1. Should the selected events for the Men be changed – A majority of two-thirds will be required to effect any change as per Regulation 16.1.3 (a).
2. Should the selected events for the Women be changed – A majority of two-thirds will be required to effect any change as per Regulation 16.1.3 (a).

In case one or both of the votes under 1 and 2 above achieve the required majority, the ‘new’ decisions on the list of events for the 2012 Olympic Events shall be made at the ISAF Annual Meeting in November 2008.

The first vote...
(April 3-8, 2008) In our poll, we assumed that the majority voted not to reaffirm the decision, so we then voted on whether the selected events for the Men and Women needed to be changed. The yes-no target was two-thirds, or 66.67%. By the end of the vote, this is how the 'buttheads felt regarding the following events that had been selected in November 2007 for the 2012 Olympics:

Men's Events
One person dinghy
One person dinghy heavy
Two person dinghy
Two person dinghy high performance
Windsurfer
Keelboat

Women's Events
One person dinghy
Two person dinghy
Keelboat match racing
Windsurfer

Should the selected events for the Men be changed?
  • 82.74% - Yes

  • 17.26% - No
  • Should the selected events for the Women be changed?
  • 70.99% - Yes

  • 29.01% - No

    The second vote...
(April 8-11, 2008) The next step now was to vote on what events were preferred. It should be noted that the ISAF decision remained for there to be 6 men events and 4 women events, with no open or mixed events. The poll had all the suggested event choices, and the 'buttheads were asked to state their preference for each event on a 1 through 5 scale. Multiple events could have similar responses along the scale, as they were not being ranked in order, only in their suitability for the 2012 Olympic Games. Here are the results of the vote:

Men’s Events (only six events get chosen)
    1. Two person dinghy (3.35)
    2. One person dinghy (3.27)
    3. Windsurfer (3.00)
    4. Multihull (2.84)
    5. Two person dinghy - skiff (2.77)
    6. One person dinghy - heavy (2.73)
    ------------------------
    7. Keelboat (2.60)
    8. One person dinghy - skiff (1.95)

Women’s Events (only four events get chosen)
    1. Two person dinghy (3.52)
    2. One person dinghy (3.44)
    3. Windsurfer (2.95)
    4. Two person dinghy - skiff (2.73)
    ------------------------
    5. Keelboat (2.53)
    6. Multihull (2.23)
