Scuttlebutt Poll: Which sailing show would you watch? November 16-18, 2010 With so much discussion about improving the manner in how sailing events are produced for television, Scuttlebutt got curious about what people would prefer to watch. And to keep this simple, we considered only the three sailing events with the highest international profile: To help level the playing field, we placed some conditions on the question. First, all the events would provide well produced, highly watchable programming. How this was done would likely vary amongst the events, but we considered that it was to be done well. Next, we put the question in the context of other real life shows. From September through May, on Wednesday night at 8:00 pm, each week these shows would provide an update to the story, with the final shows coinciding with the end of the event. Finally, we put this in the context of other sports. There is always a season series of games that precede the championship event, and it is during this initial series that an audience is built. For baseball’s 2010 World Series, interest outside of San Francisco, CA (Giants) and Arlington, TX (Rangers) would have been dramatically less if baseball enthusiasts hadn’t followed their sport since spring. The same can be done for these three events. So this is what we knew: we would have watchable shows, they would build on each other, and they would seek to engage and interest us. Then we asked...
